Indian para badminton player Suhas Yathiraj on Tuesday became the world number one in the latest BWF Para Badminton World Rankings, surpassing French veteran Lucas Mazur.
Forty-year-old Arjuna Award winner Suhas had to settle for a silver medal after losing to Mazur in the SL-4 category title match of the Tokyo Paralympics. Suhas now has 60 thousand 527 points to his name, which is more than his French opponent Mazur (58 thousand 953).

Suhas wrote on ‘X’, “Finally world number one. Happy to share that I have got the world number one ranking for the first time in my life in the men’s singles category in the latest Badminton World Federation Para Badminton Rankings announced today. I replaced long-time world number one player Lucas Mazur of France. Thank you very much for your blessings and best wishes.”
Suhas, an IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, won the world championship title in February this year by defeating Freddy Setiawan of Indonesia.
