Indian captain Rohit Sharma was evidently fuming at debutant Ishan Kishan during the third day of play in the first Test of the ongoing India-West Indies series in Dominica. The Indian captain did not hide his emotions and signalled team intent to declare from the dressing room as Kishan struggled to get going.
Kishan started his innings with 19 dot balls with the nerves of making his debut evident and the West Indies bowlers and fielders doing their best to capitalise on it. It was at this point that Rohit stepped out of his seat and told Kishan to get a move on.
Kishan finally got the first test runs of his career in the 20th ball of his innings by taking a single of Alzarri Joseph’s bowling. Having ensured that Kishan does not end his first innings in the long format of the game without getting a run on the board, Rohit did not waste any time and declared the innings.
Ultimately, India managed to get a big score of 421 on the board and ensure a massive lead of 271. It was the opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma that did the damage with a massive opening stand of 229. Jaiswal made a huge score of 171 on his debut for Team India. This is the third highest score by any Indian on test debut and the most by anyone outside Asia. Rohit made his 10th century while Virat Kohli played a gritty knock of 76.
Talking about Kishan, he came into the team in place of KS Bharat who failed to impress in his first five Test matches. In Rishabh Pant‘s prolonged absence, the wicket-keeper spot remains a major concern for the Rohit-led side, especially in red-ball cricket.
Kishan has played 14 ODIs and 27 T20Is for India.
