BJP Bengal Bandh, Nabanna Abhiyan Live: Declaring that “enough is enough”, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said it is time for India to wake up to the “perversion” of crimes against women and counter the mindset that sees women as “less powerful, less capable, less intelligent”. “Those who share such views then go further and see the female as an object… We owe it to our daughters to remove the hurdles from their path of winning the freedom from fear,” Murmu said in an exclusive signed article for PTI. Referring to the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor in a Kolkata hospital, a “dismayed and horrified” president said what is even more depressing is that it is part of a series of crimes against women.
Mamata slams bandh: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her disapproval of the recent bandh, stating, “We do not support this bandh. We have dedicated this day to the RG Kar doctor. We want justice but BJP today called for a bandh.” She further criticized the BJP’s actions, alleging that their bandh is designed to tarnish Bengal’s image and disrupt the investigation into the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case. Meanwhile, The TMC protested in response to the BJP’s call for a 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh’ against alleged police brutality during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ on Tuesday.
Rally in Kolkata: The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum launched a large rally in Kolkata on Wednesday demanding justice for their colleague. The rally started at Shyambazar and ends at Dharmatala. Notably, the Forum did not participate in Tuesday’s march to the state secretariat, Nabanna, which was organized by a students’ group.
