It’s time to call it a day as India had another medal-laden day at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok. Murali Sreeshankar’s Olympic qualifying jump grabbed the limelight while 400m mixed relay team added’s India’s sixth gold medal! Swapna Barman will resume her quest for a gold medal as the heptathlon events enter their second day with two more events left to go. The 2018 Asian Games gold medallist lost her lead in the last session of the day to defending champion Ekaterina Voronina.
Apart from her, the morning session included the men’s javelin throw qualification round but it has been cancelled directly to a final on Sunday or the last day of the Asian Athletics Championships 2023. The Indian quarter-milers will also be in action in the men’s 400m relay qualification round while hurdle queen Jyothi Yarraji will compete in 200m heats.
The evening session will have several medals on offer with Swapna Barman competing in the final heptathlon event javelin throw while the men’s long jump final will have strong medal hopes from Murali Sreeshankar, who currently is among the world leaders this season.
Men’s 400m hurdles final will see Santhosh Kumar T and Yashash P in action and will have stiff competition from Japanese hurdlers, who are seen as the favourites to win the race. The men’s 800m qualification round will see Mohammed Afsal and Krishan Kumar compete in heats.
The women’s 800m qualification heats are also slated on the day with Chanda and Lavika Sharma competing. The men’s high jump final has Tejaswin Shankar’s name in the entry list but it remains to be seen if the decathlon bronze medallist will compete after two days of gruelling events in the Bangkok heat.
Earlier on Day 3, India’s gold medal tally soar to five while the overall count increased to nine medals as three medals were on the day. Asian record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor defended his shot put crown while Parul Chaudhary reigned supreme in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final. Shaili Singh settled for silver with an effort of a 6.54-metre jump while at least two athletes missed out on medals by finish fourth.
