The prospect of tiebreakers deciding the fate of the 2024 World Chess Championship appear to be very realistic with world champion Ding Liren and the 18-year-old Indian challenger Gukesh tied on six points each after 12 games.
India’s Gukesh is playing his final game with white pieces today at least in the classical section. Ding then plays with white tomorrow in Game 14.
Both players have two more games, including today’s Game 13, to decide the contest in classical chess. If that is not possible, the battle will head into the faster time controls and be decided on Friday.
In the tiebreakers, Ding Liren will be a significant favourite to retain his World Chess Championship title, as we explain.
