Chennai: Despite the increased usage of UPI, the average cash dispensed per ATM has increased in the past eight years to Rs 1.3 crore in FY25. North Indian states dominate in the dispensation of cash.
From Rs 1.02 crore in FY17, average cash withdrawn per ATM has increased to Rs 1.30 crore in FY25. ATM cash dispensation has seen a consistent uptick since FY17, barring a slump in FY21 due to the impact of COVID.
Bihar, New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are top states in terms of cash consumption, according to CMS Consumption Report 2025.
While Bihar saw 8 per cent growth in cash withdrawals in FY25, New Delhi grew by 4 per cent, Uttar Pradesh 4 per cent, Himachal Pradesh 3 per cent and Chhattisgarh 2 per cent. New Delhi has consistently stayed in the top 5 for the past three consecutive years.
However, Tripura saw 23 per cent decline in cash withdrawals, Mizoram 16 per cent drop and Kerala 14 per cent decline in FY25.
There has been increase in the ticket size of ATM withdrawals also. The average ticket size (ATS) of ATM withdrawals in FY25 was Rs 5,658, registering a y-o-y growth of 3 per cent. Further, select months like October 2024, January 2025, February 2025, and March 2025 witnessed a higher growth in ticket size at 4 – 6 per cent.
In contrast, the ATS of all UPI transactions dropped by 8 per cent from Rs 1,603 in H1 2023 to Rs 1,478 in H1 2024, though the UPI adoption has been going up in the recent years, accounting for higher transaction values.
According to CMS data, the ATS for person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions too has declined from Rs 667 to Rs 643 in the same period, representing a 4 per cent reduction.
