Pittsburgh Pirates
It’s bump day for Luis Castillo. His last time out was a no decision in Texas on June 29th in which he gave up 1 run in 6 innings while striking out 4. Castillo is no stranger to the Pirates, having formerly shared a division with them when he played for the Reds. The matchup history is friendly for Luis, with only Isiah Kiner-Falefa, the Pirates’ 9-hole hitter tonight, having consistent success against him (5×11, 1HR).
On the offensive side of things, Cal Raleigh is batting third. After his 2-home run game yesterday, he is tied for most home runs before the All-Star break by a Seattle Mariner (35, Ken Griffey Jr.). He is also tied with Mike Piazza for the most home runs through a catcher’s first 5 seasons in MLB history (128). He is also only the 9th player — and first catcher — in MLB history to reach 35+ homers in 88 team games, and the first to do it since Barry Bonds in 2001. Long story short: Cal can hit the baseball.
Randy Arozarena, meanwhile, has gotten really hot this week. Since Monday he’s batting .421 and has launched 5 homers for and OPS of 1.611.
In other news, Jorge Polanco is batting fifth and is DHing tonight. It’s his birthday, so no one can be mean to him. He is also sitting at 998 career hits, so a pair of knocks would be a great birthday gift for him.
