The Indian electric passenger vehicle segment retained 15,423 units in July 2025, thereby recording a robust 93 percent Y-o-Y growth compared to July 2024. Market leader Tata Motors has clocked 6,000-plus sales after eight months, while JSW MG Motor India and Mahindra pumped up the volumes with over 200 percent YoY growth. Luxury EV makers, with 2,562 units and 64 percent YoY growth, maintain their 3 percent share of overall sales. July 2025 EV sales were also the highest monthly sales recorded this calendar year. Let’s take a closer look at how each of the individual players have performed last month.

Tata Motors
Sales: 6,019 units
After losing market share to Mahindra and MG for several months in a row, Tata Motors reported its highest monthly sales this calendar year in July with 6,019 units, thereby recording an 18 percent YoY growth. And while the homegrown carmaker still maintains its number one position in terms of market share, it has now reduced to just 38 percent compared to 67 percent last year. Tata continues to have the largest EV portfolio among mass-market brands with an electric version of almost its entire lineup of cars, barring the Altroz and the Safari. Tata Motors plans to regain lost e-PV market share with a goal of holding a 50 percent share, for which it has earmarked Rs 35,000 over the next five years.
JSW MG Motor India
Sales: 5,061 units
Windsor has been instrumental in solidifying MG’s position as the second best EV brand.
MG has made huge inroads into Tata Motors’ market share with the success of the Windsor. Last month, the carmaker sold 5,061 units, which again, is the highest MG recorded this calendar year. MG has also doubled its market share to 32 percent from 16 percent a year ago. The Windsor, Comet and ZS House have established a strong footing in the market, but more recently, the carmaker expanded its portfolio with the launch of the M9 MPV and the Cyberster electric sportscar. Both these EVs are positioned at the premium end of the market and will be retailed through MG’s new Select Channel. While neither of these are volume products, they could help MG carve out a niche for itself in the premium MPV and entry-level sportscar space.
Mahindra
Sales: 2,810 units
Mahindra very recently started deliveries of the mid-spec Pack Two variants of XEV 9e and BE 6.
The new BE 6 and the Xev 9e have given a solid momentum to Mahindra’s EV sales, but 2,810-unit sales in July 2025 are actually down compared to the three months preceding it. However, the carmaker has more than doubled its market share to 17 percent from 8 percent a year ago. So far, Mahindra had only been delivering the top Pack Three variants of both BE 6 and XEV 9e. It is only recently that the carmaker commenced deliveries of the mid-spec Pack Two variants of both electric SUVs. These numbers are expected to start reflecting from next month and that should give Mahindra stronger growth and better monthly sales.
Hyundai
Sales: 610 units
With the Creta Electric as Hyundai’s sole offering in the mass-market EV segment and the Ioniq 5 in the more premium space, the carmaker posted sales of 610 EVs in July 2025 – quite a way off the top three players. Sales were up compared to the 542 units in June, but the carmaker still hasn’t crossed 1,000 units in any month – its best was 904 units in March this year. Consumer response to the Creta Electric, despite its brand value, has been rather tepid. Hyundai has, however, managed to overtake BYD in our market and secured a 5 percent share of the EV market.
Creta Electric hasn’t really taken off in terms of sales as Hyundai would have hoped for.
The world of India
Sales: 457 units
BYD registered sales of 457 units in July 2025, which was down from both the previous months when they recorded 504 units in June and 527 units in May this year. The company locally assembles semi-knocked down kits of four of its models in India – Act 3, Sealion 7, Seal and the Emax 7 but geopolitical barriers with China gives it limited market reach. Still, BYD currently hold a 2 percent EV market share in our country which is pretty reasonable given the price segment it operates in.
Kia India
Sales: 57 units
Kia has just entered the mass-market EV space with the Carens Clavis EV.
Whenever registered sales of 57 units in July which was its best monthly EV sales in 2025, up from its previous best of 51 units in January this year. So far, Kia had only been operating in the premium space with the EV6 and the EV6. However, last month, the carmaker launched its first mass-market EV offeringthe Carens Clavis EV. It is a sibling to the Hyundai Creta Electric, but distinguishes itself as the most affordable three-row EV in India. With deliveries commencing this month, expect Kia to rise up the EV sales charts and make inroads into the top players’ market share.
Citroen
Sales: 41 units
With just 41-unit sales of the E-C3Citroen recorded its lowest monthly EV sales this year – its highest was 274 units in January this year. Despite operating in the affordable EV space, Citroen has been struggling with its sole electric offering. In fact, most sales of the e-C3 is actually coming from the commercial segment with fleet operators.

BMW continued to be in the lead position with 233 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz in a distant second position with 85 units. Both carmakers were, however, shy of their best monthly performance this year which was recorded in March with 272 units for BMW and 189 units for Mercedes. BMW currently holds a 58 percent share of luxury EV segment while Mercedes-Benz has 28 percent.
