Higher astronomical tides paired with strong northeast winds will bring coastal flooding to portions of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, especially during periods of high tide, according to an update from the National Weather Service.

Minor ocean overwash was reported in northern Buxton starting at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, roughly 2.5 hours before the morning’s high tide. While N.C. Highway 12 remains open and passable on Hatteras Island as of 7:00 a.m., travelers are advised to use caution and drive slowly, as saltwater can damage vehicles.
The Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry is running a limited schedule due to current weather conditions. Minor to moderate overwash was reported on N.C. Highway 12 on northern Ocracoke Island as of 7:00 a.m.

A high risk of rip currents is in effect from Cape Point in Buxton to the northern Outer Banks on Tuesday, and a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for Hatteras Island until noon.
