Ahsoka season 2 is currently in the works, and one particularly thrilling theory about this upcoming Star Wars show has just become so much more likely. The Ahsoka finale left a host of fascinating concepts on the table, although one of the most compelling was the return of the Mortis Gods.
This trio of Gods, comprising the Father, the Son, and the Daughter, who represent balance in the Force, the dark side, and the light side, respectively, was introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Despite their deaths in that arc, Ahsoka season 1 clearly set up their return.
Baylan Skoll is on a hunt for the Mortis Gods and is shown atop a statue of the Father in the season 1 finale. This has massive implications for the mythology of the Force, given what these gods represent, but the return of the Mortis Gods could also mean the return of one of Star Wars’ greatest stars for the first time in 20 years.
Star Wars Fans Are Convinced Ahsoka Season 2 Could Bring Back Natalie Portman
Although we have seen Padmé in Star Wars projects—both canon and non-canon—since Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sithincluding The Clone Warswe haven’t seen Padmé actress Natalie Portman in Star Wars since the prequel trilogy ended. This is particularly notable given other prequel stars, like Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor, have returned.
However, a brilliant Ahsoka season 2 theory suggests we could be seeing Portman again, although not in the role of Padmé. On the contrary, this theory posits that Portman could return as the terrifying Star Wars villain Abelothwho has yet to make her canon debut on screen.
Abeloth is a villain directly linked to the Mortis Gods. She was once the mortal ‘Mother’ to this trio of the Father, Son, and Daughter. Because of her mortality, she feared aging and dying, leaving behind her immortal family. This led her to bathe in the Font of Power—a dark side nexus in the Force—and the Pool of Knowledge.
Unfortunately, this corrupted the Mother, and she became the evil being named Abeloth. She ultimately had to be locked away to save the galaxy from her formidable power. Yet, with Baylan searching Peridea for the Mortis Gods, many are wondering whether this could be the planet upon which Abeloth is imprisoned.
If that’s the case, which feels more than reasonable, then there will, of course, need to be someone cast in the role. There are myriad ideas about who this could be, including Baylan Skoll’s apprentice Shin Hati, who some have pointed out could be possessed by Abeloth, as she’s also currently on Peridea.
However, the most exciting theory is that Natalie Portman could return in Ahsoka season 2 as Abeloth. With Hayden Christensen returning in Ahsoka season 2 as Anakin Skywalker, this sets up a particularly thrilling plot possibility, wherein Abeloth deceives Force Ghost Anakin by pretending to be Padmé, only to pull the rug out from under him in a devastating way.
We’ve Just Learned That Ahsoka Season 2 Is “Romantic”
Among the factors that make this theory feel particularly possible is the recent reveal by Star Wars director Bryce Dallas Howard that Ahsoka season 2 will be romantic. What exactly that means remains to be seen, but it certainly stirred up questions because season 1 set up very few, if any, possibilities for romance.
Some suspect that this could refer to Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger, although that doesn’t really hold water. Not only are Sabine and Ezra once again separated, with Ezra back in the main Star Wars galaxy and Sabine trapped on Peridea with Ahsoka, but also, Star Wars has increasingly positioned them as more like siblings than anything else.
Another popular theory is that Star Wars will canonize the fan ‘ship’ of Sabine Wren and Shin Hati. That is an exciting possibility, and it’s not off the table, but Star Wars doesn’t have the best track record of featuring queer relationships on screen, so that feels unlikely at best.
With so few options, this theory points to the fact that Hayden Christensen is returning as Anakin and, of all the couples in Star WarsAnakin and Padmé are among the most well-known and, arguably, are the core of the franchise. Because of that, even without Portman’s return thus far, it’s not difficult to imagine Star Wars pulling off this plot twist.
What is especially exciting is that it wouldn’t really be Padmé at all. Instead, Abeloth would only be posing as Padmé to deceive Anakin. This would therefore be a thrilling and innovative way for Star Wars to bring this couple back together and have it actually make sense, in light of Padmé’s death in Revenge of the Sith.
Ahsoka Season 2 Would Become A True Star Wars Event
Bringing Natalie Portman back would put Ahsoka season 2 on the map in a much more significant way, and while some may believe it’s out of the realm of possibility, there’s plenty of evidence to the contrary. In fact, in addition to what’s already been mentioned, Portman has expressed being open to returning multiple times.
Just this year, Portman was asked about whether she would want to come back to Star Warsand she said, “Life’s only fun if you’re open to every possibility.” Portman also joked about wanting to come back as a Jediand while that’s very unlikely, Portman’s interest in playing a different role could be fulfilled if she were cast as Abeloth.
At present, this remains entirely speculative. Portman’s return isn’t confirmed, and with Star Wars being known to keep secrets for as long as possible, we may not find out until the show is released. Nevertheless, this theory makes a solid case for Natalie Portman returning in Ahsoka season 2 as Abeloth, and that would be a truly brilliant twist.
