Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the two-part Season 2 finale of “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.”
“Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” concluded its second season with by unveiling a major secret about Alex Russo (Selena Gomez): She’s Billie’s (Janice LeAnn Brown) mother.
In the beginning of the “Wizards of Waverly Place” spinoff, which premiered in 2024, Alex brought Billie to live with her brother Justin (David Henrie) so he could train her in magic. As a member of the Wizard Tribunal law enforcement agency, Alex came across the powerful young wizard after learning about a prophecy that said she was the only person who could save the world from an impending apocalypse. Nobody knew who Billie’s family was or where she’d come from. But that was because of a memory wiping spell, which is revealed in the two-part Season 2 finale titled “The Wizard at the End of the World.”
Going into the finale, Billie has just learned that her crush, Quentin (Recker Eans), is actually an orc who was gaining her trust on behalf of an evil wizard named Lord Morsus. Quentin eventually grew feelings for Billie and decided to confess to her before running away. Billie tries to find him, knowing he’ll be in danger after betraying Lord Morsus, but Justin puts a hex on the house that makes it impossible for her to sneak out. Billie responds by casting a spell that fills every room of the house with gummy bears, forcing Justin to move the family to Alex’s apartment temporarily.

Alex, Justin and his wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) leave the kids at home and go to the Wizard Tribunal to look for information about Lord Morsus. There, they discover that Tribunal member Bigelow McFigglehorn (Kirsten Vangsness) is under a spell that’s forcing her to work for the evil wizard, and they free her. Meanwhile, Billie sneaks out and finds where Morsus is keeping Quentin. But when she gets there, Quentin is alone, as Morsus has shapeshifted to look like Justin so he can trick Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko) into letting him into Alex’s apartment. He takes them to Billie and Quentin, and Roman immediately uses his want to send Quentin to “the Nowhere Zone” after seeing him in his orc form.
Back at the Tribunal, Figglehorn says Morsus’ first name is Torodos, and Giada realizes that “Torodos Morsus” is actually an anagram for “Doom to Russos.” A talking statue called the “gossip stone” tells them that his real name is Penwolf, which sounds familiar to Alex. When they get home, she finds a wooden box that’s decorated with golden pen and wolf and has a golden locket inside, but she’s not able to open it. More importantly, the kids are gone. On the ground, she and Justin find and press a button Billie got from Quentin that takes its users straight to Lord Morsus.

Since Morsus is still posing as Justin, Billie figures out which Justin is real by asking them if they’re angry at her for sneaking out to find Quentin. Morsus, trying to win Billie over, says that he isn’t, but Justin admits that he is, and Billie knows he’s telling the truth. Morsus reveals his true self, then uses magic to tie up everyone except for Billie, holding them hostage as he forces her to help him open a rift that will connect their world to the world of dark magic. Seeing Billie’s pain as she works on the portal, Alex begins to cry, and a tear falls onto the Penwolf locket. That causes a forgotten memory to reveal itself to everyone in the room.
In the memory, Alex is crying as she and Justin drop off a young Billie at a boarding school for wizards. “I don’t wanna go. I wanna stay with you, Mommy,” says Billie, who appears about seven years old. “I would do anything to be with you,” Alex says, “but right now, there’s someone out there trying to find you, and I can’t let that happen.” Justin reminds Alex that they need to go, and that Billie’s grandfather can never find out she exists, so Alex promises Billie that they’ll find each other again and then casts a spell that wipes her and Justin of their memories of Billie and vice versa. That way, it will be harder for them to lead the evil wizard to each other.
Realizing that Billie is his granddaughter, Morsus says his son never would have allowed the memory wipe. Alex retorts that it was his son’s idea. (At the end of the episode, the gossip stone explains that Morsus aka Damian Penwolf was the father of Damian Penwolf, who was also evil until falling in love with Alex.) Milo manages to reach his wand and casts a spell to untie everyone, but it’s too late: The rift is open, and it can only be sealed from the other side. After a tearful embrace with Billie, Alex decides to sacrifice herself. She tackles Morsus and they both fall through the portal, which closes behind them.
Though it brings Billie to tears to finally find her mother and then lose her so quickly, the episode ends warmly. Billie and the Russos share a group hug, now knowing that Billie is family in more ways than one.
