Mizoram Election Results Live Updates: In Mizoram, most exit polls anticipated a hung House, foreseeing neither the ruling Mizo National Front nor its main rival, the Zoram People’s Movement, securing a majority in the 40-member Assembly.
Election Results 2023 Mizoram Live Updates: The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has been declared the winner in 27 seats, surpassing the halfway mark in the 40-seat Assembly. Lalduhoma, ZPM’s Chief Ministerial candidate, has secured a clear victory in the Serchhip constituency. Meanwhile, state Health Minister and MNF candidate R Lalthangliana faced defeat against ZPM’s Jeje Lalpekhlua in the South Tuipui seat. Later in the evening, incumbent CM Zoramthanga tendered his resignation.
Mizoram’s political landscape has been dominated by the Congress and the Mizo National Front (MNF) since it attained full statehood in 1987. Zoramthanga of the MNF became Chief Minister after the 1998 Assembly polls, ending Congress’s 10-year rule. The MNF governed for a decade until Congress won in 2008 and 2013. Returning to power in 2018, MNF aims for another victory in the 40-member Assembly this year.

Congress’s campaign was mainly centred on an anti-BJP plank, portraying both the MNF and ZPM as “entry points” for the BJP into the Christian-majority state. By contesting just 23 seats, the BJP had hoped to play a role in government formation. The Congress had also raked up the Manipur crisis against the BJP in its poll campaign, attributing it to the alleged mismanagement by the BJP in the Northeast. The MNF, too, hoped the Manipur crisis will boost its poll prospects.

Mizoram polls: In historical MNF-Congress battle, ZPM an emerging force
In 1972, Mizoram was carved out of Assam, initially as a Union Territory until it became a full state in 1987. Since then, state politics has been dominated by the Congress and Mizo National Front (MNF). The Congress has long been led by five-time Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, who first got the top post in 1984. But this time, it has handed over the baton to Lalsawta, a three-time MLA and former finance minister who heads the state unit. Lalsawta is also the Congress’s candidate against the MNF’s Zoramthanga, a three-time CM who is again leading the party into the polls.

At stake in Mizoram polls: BJP’s agenda and people’s will
The Assembly elections to be held in Mizoram today have garnered much attention. Perhaps the fact that they will soon be followed by Assembly elections in four other states and the general elections next year has given more attention to the campaigns in Mizoram as they provide an opportunity to gauge the political mood of the country. Whether Mizoram, along with the rest of the Northeast, will fall under the sway of the BJP is also something that is being keenly watched.
While the BJP is not likely to perform well in the electionwhether it will be able to determine the course of the politics in the state after the elections is the point over which the three main contenders — the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF), the INC and the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) — are positioning themselves. The recent turn of events in Manipur have made the people wary of the BJP — something that was, perhaps, not the case earlier. Thus, the MNF, although it was part of the North-East Democratic Alliance, is busy trying to justify its earlier associations with the BJP. The fact that these elections are three-cornered has made it a campaign like no other (although the AAP has also fielded candidates, it is not expected to make much headway).
