Barbie also secured a nomination for Best Picture, implying that co-producer Robbie, aged 33, is in the running for an Academy Award. However, she did not receive a nomination in the Best Actress category.
The Best Director nominees announced on Tuesday morning include Justin Triet for Anatomy of a Fall, Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon, Christopher Nolan for OppenheimerYorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things, and Jonathan Glazer for The Zone of Interest.

In the Best Actress category, the nominees are Annette Bening for Nyad, Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, Carey Mulligan for Maestro, and Emma Stone for Poor Things.
Robbie has secured numerous awards this year for her acting work in Barbie, including nominations at the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
In past years, Gerwig received a Best Director nomination for her debut, Lady Bird, in 2017, but she was not nominated for her other film, Little Women, in 2019. However, she did receive writing nominations for both of those films.
For Barbie, Gerwig secured directing nominations from the Directors Guild of America, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice Awards earlier this year.
Throughout the history of the Academy Awards, only three women have won Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 for The Hurt Locker, Chloé Zhao in 2021 for Nomadland, and Jane Campion in 2022 for The Power of the Dog.
