Memphis Depay and Yannick Carrasco secured a deserved 2-1 friendly win for Atletico Madrid over Manchester City.
Kickoff was delayed by 40 minutes following torrential rain in Seoul and a lively contest ensued, with City making most of the running in a high-tempo first half but Alvaro Morata and Thomas Lemar spurning the best two chances for Atleti.
Kyle Walker rattled the crossbar from distance and substitute Mateo Kovacic went close before Atletico’s wholesale changes paid dividends as Depay and Carrasco thumped home fabulous finishes from distance.
Ruben Dias headed home a late Sergio Gomez corner but Pep Guardiola’s treble-winners were unable to find an equaliser ahead of next weekend’s Community Shield showdown with Arsenal.

Fulltime: There’s the whistle. Two fine finishes from Memphis and Carrasco give Atletico the victory. Considering that and the fact that City’s goalkeepers, especially Ortega after the break, were busier, then you have to conclude it was a deserved victory for the LaLiga side. Dias pulled one back for City and completed 90 minutes. Pep Guardiola will have enjoyed the efforts of his first-team starters before the break and they look in decent enough shape as the Premier League season looms. Thanks for joining us.

90th minute: Foul by Saul on halfway. Probably City’s last chance to have a go for an equaliser.
87th minute: Soyuncu munches through the back of Alvarez and is booked. Nice way for them both to celebrate completing 90 minutes.

Gomez gets this delivery right. Dias gets up and powers a header that Grbic can’t keep out. A lively crowd in excess of 60,000 will get the grandstand finish their vocal backing probably merits.
85th minute: City pin Atletico back before Phillips switches play nicely. Cancelo’s header towards the six yard box is cleared behind for a corner…which is cleared behind for a corner.

Lewis makes a fairly tame challenge in midfield, Carrasco surges into space and drills a fabulous strike into the bottom corner.
73rd minute: Ortega again to the rescue for City as Llorente finds space down the right channel. Memphis fires his shot straight at the City keeper, who beats it clear and the Dutch international fires the bouncing ball over on the rebound.
70th minute: More sloppy play from City in their own box as Dias gives the ball away. Cancelo steps in to spare his international teammate.
69th minute: Bobb slips a delightful pass into Lewis and Soyuncu – the sole survivor from Atletico’s starting lineup – slides in with a brilliant last-ditch challenge.

Sloppy from City as they give the ball away playing out form the back and Ortega is forced into fantastic save to deny Barrios. Memphis retrieves the loose ball, plays a one-two with Correa and curls a sumptuous strike into the top corner. from outside the box.
64th minute: One of the near men almost opens the scoring, with Correa into the City box but he can’t find a prodded finish.
61st minute: “Hold my cerveza,” says Diego Simeone. He’s making nine changes. Bear with me here…
56th minute: City should lead! Guardiola has just made eight substitutions and Atletico seemed to have no idea who should be picking up who. Cancelo’s chipped ball into the box finds McAtee, he tries to round Grbic, Rojoblanco shirts scramble back and at the end of all that Kovacic blasts over from close range.
54th minute: For reasons best known to himself, the linesman gave City a corner despite that very pure Walker strike taking no deflection at all. It comes to nothing in any case.
53rd minute: OH MY WORD KYLE WALKER! Foden’s set-piece delivery is rubbish and cleared to about 35 yards, where Walker clatters one of the half volley that hits the top of the crossbar. Grbic did not sniff that.
52nd minute: Grealish nudges it past De Paul and gets caught. Dangerous free-kick here as a gaggle of City subs get themselves ready on the touchline.
50th minute: Now there’s a load of kerfuffle between both sets of players. To the surprise of no one in particular, De Paul appears to have been the instigator. Him and Azpilicueta are doubling up on Grealish now, so that will be nice and quiet.
49th minute: Incredible save by Ortega! The left-wing corner is flicked on and Lino looksmcertain to score at the back post, only for Ortega to claw the ball away from. That was mighty close to crossing the line.
48th minute: The pattern of thrust and counter-thrust continues. Lino again influential for Atletico and Griezmann’s attempted ball towards Morata is deflected wide by John Stones.
47th minute: An intense period of City pressure, Walker nods back across goal towards Haaland and Witsel get into volley clear.
46th minute: The only changes for each side is a switch in goal. Ederson makes way for Ortega between City’s posts, with Grbic replacing Oblak. That certainly feels like good news for the spectacle.
Halftime: A entertaining goalless half comes to an end. Haaland seems annoyed about something. Probably the lack of goals. But this has been good after the delayed start. City made most of the running with Alvarez, Foden and Grealish all shimmering behind their No. 9. But the best two chances have fallen Atletico’s way, with Morata and Lemar unable to convert.
45th minute: Final minute of the half, but Griezmann isn’t tired. The France star comes back deep into the Atletico half and then embarks upon a best-kid-in-the-playground dribble, ending up in the City penalty area. Walker gets back to persuade him against going any further.
43rd minute: Alvarez is teed up by Grealish and lines up a curler from 25 yards. Oblak reads it all the way.
40th minute: Haaland turns Witsel on halfway. A decent amount of experience on Dortmund’s training pitches probably means Witsel has no interest in seeing this progress further and he brings down the City striker in uncomplicated fashion. Haaland lands on his old pal and finds the whole thing very funny.
36th minute: Silva has clattered into De Paul for the second time in the match. Two players who don’t really have lower gears to engage for friendlies.
34th minute: Another big chance for Atletico. Lino again involved, he’s been really impressive. The Brazilian streaks clear on the break before holding up play to wait for the cavalry to arrive. He chips a cute ball in to Lemar, who is let down by a combination of the soggy pitch and his own touch. Ederson pounces at his feet.
30th minute: Back come City. Bernardo Silva drills a pass into Foden and he pulls a strike just beyond Oblak’s far post.
29th minute: Should be 1-0 to Atletico Lino drifts into space on the left and curls a cross into the six-yard box. Morata catches Stones briefly napping. it’s wonderful, intelligent movement but the headed finish from four yards out is woeful.
25th minute: Another foul by Azpilicueta. Grealish looks impressively aghast. No second yellow. He couldn’t, surely?
23rd minute: Grealish is probably making Azpilicueta feel quite good about leaving the Premier League. He gets in a cross towards Haaland at the back post, with the City No. 9 taking a tumble. The referee waves “play on”.
22nd minute: City win a second corner of this spell of pressure and Rodri heads home Foden’s inswinger but Stones had already been penalised for a foul on goalkeeper Oblak.
20th minute: Instead of shooting, Griezmann dabs the free-kick to the back post. It’s not a great call as City clear and Alvarez tears forward. Via Grealish, Haaland gets space to shoot and Azpilicueta deflects his strike wide.
19th minute: That’s a clumsy foul from Alvarez on De Paul to give Atletico a free-kick in a dangerous area of the field. De Paul stood up there looking for an argument before seemingly dialling things back when he realised he’d been clumped by his Argentina teammate.
18th minute: Koke carelessly cedes possession inside his own half. Soyuncu has to reckon with a rampaging Haaland but stands his ground very well.

16th minute: Remember that majestic turn Phil Foden produced to almost score in the Champions League final? He’s just pulled another out of the bag. He’s eventually crowded out before Grealish’s cross is cleared out of a frantic Atletico goalmouth.
15th minute: Azpilicueta has managed to earn himself a booking for persistent fouling in a friendly. A really solid effort! Grealish was the man to draw the infraction again.
11th minute: Plenty of cute sharp play from City so far. Foden and Alvarez pop off a one-two and Witsel blocks the England international’s shot. Back come Atletico and, after Walker thwarts one counter attack, Laporte clears a Griezmann cross behind for a corner.
7th minute: Alvarez slides a reverse pass into Haaland, who outmuscles Witsel to get a shot away. Oblak holds on in relative comfort.
5th minute: Grealish gets around Azpilicueta, Atletico can only partially clear the low cross and Silva’s shot is blocked.
3rd minute: Bernardo Silva snaffles a second-ball in trademark style and Foden and Haaland are involved before Alvarez shoots over. Lively start!
2nd minute: Azpilicueta completes his second foul on Grealish within a matter of seconds. The Atletico players virtually tag-teamed Grealish during the 2022 Champions League quarterfinal so that’s one to keep an eye on.

KICK-OFF DELAYED: Still no sign of an Atleti XI and this probably has something to do with reports emerging on the ground in Seoul that kickoff will be pushed back due to the torrential rain that has given the playing surface a battering. There is not confirmed time yet, but a delay of half an hour has been mooted. Player safety is always paramount but these are concerning times for Guardiola and Simeone, who will be reluctant to see their squads put at risk on the eve of the new season.
