Mahindra Thar.e: what do the teasers show?
While the teasers don’t show much of the upcoming Thar.e, it does show that the electric 4×4 concept will have a squareish design language as seen in the Thar ICE. The Thar.e will have square headlights and tail-lights and ‘Thar.e’ badging near them.
The teasers also show Born Electric lettering, which indicate that the Thar.e could be based on Mahindra’s new born EV platforms instead of the current ladder-frame chassis used on the Thar ICE. The INGLO born EV platform, which debuted last year, makes more sense as it will be lighter than a ladder-frame chassis. Weight has been an issue for an EV due to heavy batteries and the lighter born EV architecture could help reduce some weight and increase range. Furthermore, due to long and cross beams, packaging the battery in a ladder-frame chassis becomes an issue which can be resolved with a dedicated EV platform.
However, a ladder-frame chassis could still be an option for the Thar.e. Many EVs, like the Ford F-150 Lightning, are built on ladder-frame chassis as it allows for better load and towing capacity. Mahindra did state that it is looking into ladder-frame electric SUVs and could use this platform to make eletcrified versions of the Bolero or Scorpio. With these, the brand could utilisie this platform to electrify its commercial vehicles as well.
Mahindra Thar.e price and launch date
Since the Thar.e is currently a concept, Mahindra will need to work on the production feasibility before working out the price and launch. More information about the Thar.e will emerge at its global debut on August 15 in South Africa. Mahindra will also showcase the Scorpio N pickup concept at the event.
