International Friendship Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday of August. This day is dedicated to friendship. Friendship is like a reliance in difficult times, so one should be very careful in choosing friends. We can learn from Shri Ram and Sugriva how friendship should be.

In Ramayana, Hanuman ji made Shri Ram and Sugriva be friends. In the first meeting, Shri Ram told Sugriva that I am wandering in the jungles in search of my wife Sita, but you are the king. Why are you living in the jungle?

Sugriva told Shri Ram that he has an elder brother named Bali. He has become my enemy. Earlier everything was fine, but one day a demon came to our kingdom and Bali went to kill him. Bali is very strong and he does not leave the enemy alive. When Bali went to kill that demon, I also followed him.

The demon fled into a cave, Bali also followed him into the cave. I was standing just outside the cave. After some time blood started flowing out of the cave, I thought that the demon had killed Bali. I returned to my kingdom from there in fear.

The people of the state made me the king thinking that Bali was dead, but after a few days Bali returned alive. When he saw me as the king, he started considering me as his enemy.

Bali has taken my wife by force and I am hiding in the forest to save my life.

Shriram listened to Sugriva’s whole thing and said okay I will help you.

At first Sugriva did not trust Shri Ram. He started thinking that Bali is so strong, how can Ram kill him? How can this help me?

Seeing doubt on Sugriva’s face, Shriram said that Sugriva, now I am your friend. There are six qualities of a friend. First, to feel sorry for your friend. Second, to try to remove the sorrow of a friend. Third, to stop the friend from going on the wrong path. Fourth, don’t doubt at the time of transaction. Fifth, always do good to a friend and the sixth quality is to stand by a friend in times of trouble. These are all the signs of a good friend and you can consider me as your friend.

After listening to Shriram’s words, Sugriva got faith in his words. After this Sugriva also promised to help in the search for Sita. Both the friends resolved to solve each other’s problems.

Lessons from the friendship of Shri Ram and Sugriva

We can learn from this episode that one should be very careful in choosing a friend, because friendship is a trust and a support in difficult times. If our friend is good then he will stand by us in difficulties and help us.
