Today’s In History: The date of August 27 is recorded in the history of the country and the world for many important reasons. This date is special for the Guinness Book, which provides the highest platform for the adventures of the whole world. The Guinness Book was published for the first time on 27 August in 1955. Now, news is often published and shown that the name of such and such a person has been registered in the Guinness Book.
The story of the Guinness Book begins in the 1950s. Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director of the Guinness Brewery Company in Ireland, was bird hunting with his friends. Just then a flock of birds passed in front of him very fast. Hughes and his companions were perplexed that who are these birds flying so fast? Everyone started giving different answers, but the trouble was, there was no way of knowing whose answer was correct. Hughes and his friends also looked in the books, but could not find any accurate information.
Then Hughes got the idea to make a book that had all the facts. In 1954, Hughes shared the idea with twin brothers Norris and Ross. Both of them used to work in a fact finding agency in London. Both liked the idea and work on the Guinness Book began.
An old gym on Fleet Street in London has been converted into an office. Work began and on 27 August 1955 the first Guinness Book came on the market. People liked this 198-page book so much that it became a best seller in Britain by December. The very next year, the Guinness Book was launched in America. By 1960, half a million copies of the Guinness Book had been sold. After this, this book started being published in different languages. Today, the Guinness Book is published in more than 100 countries in 37 languages.
