Derek Carr injury update: “When he plays will be determined by swelling and how he gains mobility”
Join now with Dr Russell Russo and we are going to say that Doctor Russo is not affiliated with the Saints. He’s not affiliated with their car. He is here to give us his opinion based on what he saw on TV. You are an orthopedic surgeon. You watched it like the rest of it, like the rest of us. Excuse me, your initial thoughts on the car injury. Sure. So any time *** quarterback kind of gets slammed down on that shoulder, which is, it’s *** common quarterback injury, there’s one or two places it can break and I’ll show you this picture here. Um, basically the collarbones gotta break or the ac joint, *** ka *** shoulder separation has to happen. And there are several types of shoulder separation which can be very mild to very serious. And unfortunately, you know, without seeing x-rays, we, we really don’t know where we’re at right now, right? The NFL network reported that car was transported to *** local hospital. Why would they do that? And does that indicate that it’s something more severe? Possibly? Usually, um, they’ll have x-ray within the stadium so they’ll have immediate access to x-ray, but uh, out of precaution, they may have wanted more formal x-rays in *** hospital setting. Um, I doubt they would get an MRI or anything immediately. They would wait till they got home. So likely, maybe they were concerned that there might be some small break, um, or just ruling it out to be safe. Let me ask you following up on the first thing you said based on the severity of it. What is the range of that injury you said, you know, depending on what type of injury it is and the severity of it. What’s the best and worst case scenario? And again, we are speculating here right now. So *** type one sprain uh it just kind of hurts and uh nothing’s torn, it, you just kind of stretch everything. Type two, you can tear some of the ligaments, um like in this picture here, you can tear just some of these ligaments pictured *** type three, all of the ligaments are ruptured regardless. Nowadays, all three wouldn’t require surgery, but it still could make the difference between *** one week, *** 2 to 3 week or *** 4 to 6 week, uh term time. Now, obviously you deal with athletes and normal patients as well. What kind of difference does it make it when you are dealing with someone who is an athlete who works their body versus *** normal person that recovery time, right? So these athletes get extremely uh great care state of the art, they get injections and special things just to get them back into the game because every game is, you know, life or death it feels like for us fans and, and everybody around. So, you know, if we were going back to our job at, uh, the news station, they’re not gonna inject your shoulder, so you’re not hurting so you can go back on TV. Um, so they’re gonna really push the limits on those timetables with him. Whereas with us, it might be more of *** six week to three month process regardless. All right, Dr Russell Russo, I have *** feeling we are gonna be hearing *** lot more from you this week. Thank you very much for your time today. Thank you.
