Mumbai: Fans were looking forward today to see if superstar Virat Kohli will surpass cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar’s century record. Kohli (88) fell short of his 49th ODI century while Sachin Tendulkar himself was in the gallery. But today’s match broke another record of Master Blaster. King Kohli’s achievement is in the years 2011-14, 2017-19 and 2023. Sachin Tendulkar scored 1000 ODI runs in seven calendar years. Sachin Tendulkar achieved this feat in 1994, 1996-98, 2000, 2003 and 2007.
Jones tweeted that Kohli also achieved the records of fastest to 8000 ODI runs in Asia, 4000 international runs against Sri Lanka, second highest run scorer in 2023 World Cup and most half-centuries in World Cups other than an opener.
Opener Shubman Gill (92), who was playing aggressively today, returned without scoring a well-deserved century along with Virat Kohli. Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for 82 runs. Dilshan Madhushanaka sent off the first four players including Rohit Sharma. But on the strength of the three men’s half-centuries, India scored 357 runs for the loss of eight wickets against Sri Lanka. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 55 runs in 19.4 overs. India won by 302 runs.
