The state government has declared the death anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, which is observed as Mahaparinirvan Din on December 6, a public holiday in Mumbai.
All government and non-government offices, along with schools and colleges in Mumbai city and suburbs will remain closed on Wednesday, according to a circular issued by the general administration department.

The circular also mentions that state government in the past has declared two days — Anant Chaturdashi and Dahi Handi, as local holiday for Mumbai city and suburbs from 1996 and 2007, respectively. From 2023, Mahaparinirwan Divas is added to the list of local holiday.
The move comes a day after Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president and MLA Varsha Gaikwad wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinderequesting him to declare December 6 as public holiday.
