FEBRUARY BROUGHT THREATS TO HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, LEADING TO MANY CANCELING CLASSES THIS SUMMER. A MAN KILLED THREE PEOPLE IN A PREDOMINANTLY BLACK NEIGHBORHOOD IN A RACIALLY MOTIVATED ATTACK RIGHT NEXT TO EDWARD’S WATER UNIVERSITY IN JACKSONVILLE. IN OCTOBER, FIVE PEOPLE WERE SHOT AT MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY IN BALTIMORE. OVER THE YEARS, BETHUNE COOKMAN UNIVERSITY IN DAYTONA BEACH HAS SEEN HIS SHARE OF SAFETY CONCERNS ABOUT A YEAR AGO, THE SCHOOL RECEIVED A THREAT THAT THERE WAS A BOMB ON CAMPUS. IN RECENT YEARS, THE SCHOOL HAS WORKED HARD TO BEEF UP SECURITY. BELVIN PERRY, JUNIOR WITH BETHUNE-COOKMAN, SAYS THEY HAVE SECURITY MEASURES IN PLACE OVER A THOUSAND CAMERAS AND A SECURITY FORCE ON CAMPUS. BUT BECAUSE THE SCHOOL IS RIGHT IN THE HEART OF MIDTOWN, IT’S AN URBAN CAMPUS. AND PERRY SAYS THEY COULD DO BETTER IN SECURING IT. PERRY SAYS THEY HOPE TO ADD MORE PERIMETER FENCING AREAS, CLOSING A LOT OF ENTRY AND EXIT POINTS TO THE UNIVERSITY WITH PERIMETER FENCING WITH GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS. MOSTRILLIONECENT BUDGET PROPOSAL. THIS COULD SOON BE A REALITY FOR THE SCHOOL. DESANTIS IS PROPOSING GIVING $10 MILLION IN SCHOOL HARDENING GRANTS TO FLORIDA’S HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES. THIS IS TO PREVENT ANYONE FROM TARGETING HBCUS WITH VIOLENCE. PERRY IS HAPPY TO HEAR ABOUT THE GOVERNOR’S PROPOSAL. HE SAYS, QUOTE, THIS IS NOT HIS FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO HELP HBCUS, AND THIS IS A BIG STEP IN HELPING US WHERE WE TRULY NEED HELP.
