New Delhi: With the election of Sanjay Singh as the new president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), there has been a stir in wrestling once again. Wrestler Sakshi Malik has already announced his retirement expressing his dissatisfaction with these results.. Recently another legendary wrestler Bajrang Punia has taken a sensational decision. He announced on social media that he was returning the 'Padma Shri' award.
Dear Modiji, I know you are busy with your work. But I am writing this letter to bring to your attention the condition of wrestlers in this country. You may be aware of the agitation by female wrestlers in January this year after allegations of sexual harassment against former WFI president Brijbhushan. I also participated in that protest to support them. As the central government promised to take action on those allegations, we called off the agitation. But, even after months, no FIR was registered against Brijbhushan, so we had to hit the road again. We wanted to join our medals in the river Ganga for justice. Even then, the Center has promised to take action against him,” Bajrang said in his letter.

But, now with the results of the WFI elections, the wrestling federation is back in Brijbhushan's hands. Unable to bear these results, Sakshi Malik announced her retirement. Now we don't know where to go for justice. This government has done a lot for us. I got Padma Shri in 2019. Awards like Arjuna and Khel Ratna also came. But, today the women wrestlers had to say goodbye to the game due to their lack of security. This made me so depressed. That is why I have decided to return my Padma Shri to you (Prime Minister Modi),” Punia said in his letter.
It is known that top wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi, Bajrang Punia and others have protested in two installments accusing Brijbhushan of sexual harassment. Now that his confidant Sanjay Singh is the president of WFI, the wrestlers expressed their concern that this harassment will continue. Sakshi Malik announced her retirement on Thursday.
