Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs has targeted the current South African Test team captain Temba Bavuma. Herschelle Gibbs has described Temba Bavuma as unfit and overweight. Bavuma limped off the field after suffering an injury while fielding on the first day of the Boxing Day Test against India. Dean Elgar, playing his final Test series before retiring from international cricket, took over the captaincy after Bavuma's injury in the first season.
The incident occurred during the 20th over of the first Test match being played in Centurion, when South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first. Temba Bavuma injured himself, straining his left hamstring, while attempting to block a shot from Indian batsman Virat Kohli. Responding to a post on 'X', Herschelle Gibbs hit out at the South African captain, calling him 'unfit to play and overweight'.

Herschelle Gibbs wrote, “The irony is that since he started as the Proteas trainer in 2009, the coach has allowed some players to play who are clearly unfit and overweight.” The incident forced the immediate removal of Bavuma from the field, who played in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup semi-final for South Africa in India last month. Interestingly, he was suffering from a right hamstring injury during that match.
Bavuma was sent for medical evaluation to assess the severity of the strain following the injury. The injury was revealed during the day's commentary, with Bavuma suffering a strain in his left hamstring. Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada was the star of the day for South Africa, getting his first five-wicket haul against India. With this he became the seventh South African bowler to take 500 wickets in international cricket.
