GUWAHATI: A fourth-year girl student of IIT Guwahati, who was rushed to hospital in an unconscious state after partying on New Year’s Evewas declared dead on arrival, authorities announced on Tuesday.
Police said 21-year-old Pulluri Aishwarya from Telangana’s Karimnagar city had returned after the winter vacation to join a New Year‘s party on December 31 at a pub in Guwahati-Shillong road along with three friends from the Institute.
As the campus was shut for the night, Aishwarya, a student of electronics and communication engineering along with her three friends, two boys and one girl student went to stay in a nearby hotel, one staff member said. Early on January 1, she complained of suffocation inside the hotel room and an ambulance was called to take her to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where she was declared dead.
“The IIT Guwahati student was brought to our hospital on Monday morning. At 8.19 am, we declared her dead,” GMCH hospital superintendent Abhijit Sarma said. Police said consumption of alcohol could be the reasons behind her death, but they were still waiting for the detailed autopsy report.
While the winter break at IIT-Guwahati was scheduled till Tuesday, Aishwarya’s father Ravi, who goes by one name, told TOI that his daughter reached Guwahati a couple of days before the vacation ended.
Don’t suspect anyone for her death: Father
While the cops said they are exploring all angles, no one has been detained so far. After preliminary investigation and questioning, the three students were allowed to go.
“After enjoying an event to welcome the New Year, all four students went to the hotel. Her friends took Aishwarya to the hospital when she complained of suffocation. Police intimated her family and IIT Guwahati staff immediately,” said DCP (central), Guwahati Amitabh Basumatary.
He said the police have started an investigation after registering a case of unnatural death, but no FIR was lodged by the family of the student.
“We don’t suspect anyone behind her death. Something unfortunate was about to happen, and it happened. Aishwarya arrived in Guwahati from home, hours before on the same day when this incident happened,” her father Ravi told TOI.
“The police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts are with the grieving family, and we await the findings of the investigation,” IIT Guwahati said in a statement on Tuesday.
A hotel official said they recorded their relationship as friends while booking two rooms at the hotel at Paltan bazar on December 31. “They entered our hotel at 1:30 am on January 1. The students told us that they were coming from a pub near the hotel in Guwahati-Shillong Road,” the official said.
