Every year, January 9 is celebrated as NRI Day (NRI Day 2024). This day is a day to honor those people who, while living in other countries, have enhanced the prestige of India in various fields. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is associated with Mahatma Gandhi. Let us know why January 9 was chosen to celebrate this day? What is the history of this day?
Know why January 9 was chosen
In order to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the development of India, in the year 2002, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced the celebration of Pravasi Diwas in India. After this, this day was celebrated for the first time on 9 January 2003. The day of January 9 was chosen because on this day in 1915, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa and after returning to India, he led India's freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever.
This day is celebrated every two years with a special theme.
It was celebrated every year from 2003 to 2015. But it was amended in the year 2015 and since then Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas started being celebrated at an interval of every two years. On this occasion, a special theme is chosen by the Ministry of External Affairs. According to that theme, very big conferences are organized in the country by the Government of India. In the year 2023, the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas was celebrated in Indore. Its theme was- 'Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India's Progress in Amrit Kaal'.
