A24, the cult film distribution company behind Hollywood’s most esoteric and fiercely independent releases, has given up emotional whiplash, previewing the first look for the heart wrenching romantic drama We Live In Time a day after debuting the glorious gory slasher thriller MaXXXine in cinemas. The former movie is a stirring chronicle following the bond of the fictional British couple Almut and Tobias, portrayed by Academy Award nominees Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield respectively.
As if Nicholas Sparks met Sally Rooneythe film is a bona fide tearjerker set to warm and break our hearts in equal measures. Set over a decade, the original story follows the couple’s disastrous meet-cutedescent into quotidian familial bliss in central London before being faced with the realisation that their time together is not a guarantee. When we promise to take a spouse “till death do us part”, what of the realities that proceed this finite gesture of love? Given the irresistible chemistry the leads exude, Pugh and Garfield’s on-screen relationship will undoubtedly be poignant, introspective and incredibly memorable.
With a January 23 theatrical release date, the powers at be in Hollywood have allowed us many months to prepare ourselves. (And as it says in the film’s poster: “Every minute counts”.) Following the widely discussed trailer release, keep scrolling ahead for everything to know—including the poignant plot which Pugh describes as a “real story about real people”—about We Live In Time.
What Is We Live In Time About?
We Live In Time follows the lives of Almut (Pugh), a burgeoning chef, and Tobias (Garfield), a recent divorcée. Their lives quite literally crash into one another one evening when Almut hits Tobias with her car. Following a quick trip to the hospital, the pair fall in love, slowly then all at once. This origin story becomes the throughline of their romance, as it’s hinted that Almut suffers from a mysterious impact that alters the course of their relationship altogether.
As per the official synopsis “Through snapshots of their life together—falling for each other, building a home, becoming a family—a difficult truth is revealed that rocks its foundation. As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken, in filmmaker John Crowley’s decade-spanning, deeply moving romance.”
Throughout the trailer, we get glimpses at these snapshots as Almut and Tobias welcome a daughter and bravely navigate her health struggles while remaining optimistic for their future. In these fragments—Almut’s growing baby bump throughout her pregnancy or her blonde hair becoming a shaved buzz cut throughout her worsening condition—we see the breadth of seizing a life worth living, especially while on borrowed time.
