Another suspected death due to the virus is being probed in Goghamba. The Panchmahal district health officer said measures are being taken to assess the number of cases.
A four-year-old girl from Kotda village of Panchmahal district died of a Chandipura virus (CHPV) infection on Wednesday, the district health department confirmed.
The girl had been admitted to Vadodara’s SSG hospital on July 16, where she died on Wednesday morning. “She had developed symptoms of CHPV such as high grade fever, vomiting and convulsions on July 15. It is the first case of CHPV in the district… We undertook surveillance in the village after she reported symptoms,” said Chief District Health Officer (CDHO) Dr M R Chaudhari.

“During our survey, it came to light that one child from Goghamba was admitted to a private hospital between July 4 and 6 for treatment and succumbed. It could be a CHPV case and we are examining her history,” Chaudhari said, adding that no other suspected cases in the district were currently under treatment.
“So far, the numbers (of cases) are not big and we are undertaking measures as well as collecting random serology test samples of children from areas with a history of fever,” he further said.
The CDHO said that the health teams of the district had undertaken preventive measures before the monsoons, such as advising villagers to cover gaps in the walls, and ensure hygiene and sanitation. “The CHPV virus is more common in rural areas as its breeding ground is usually dark holes in trees or the gaps between bricks of kutcha homes,” he explained.
