Before taking the court for the first time as a TCU Horned FrogTCU fans can cheer on their biggest transfer portal addition of the offseason during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Guard Hailey Van Lith, who transferred in April after four seasons at Louisville and LSU, was selected to the USA Basketball 3×3 women’s national team. She is expected to be a key contributor as Team USA goes for back-to-back gold medals in the second Olympics of the sport’s inclusion.
The 2020 USA team went 6-1 in pool play before getting past France and Russia to win the inaugural gold in the event. The team featured WNBA stars Stefanie Dolson, Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young.
This year’s Olympic squad includes Los Angeles Sparks’ Dearica Hamby, the Atlanta Dream’s Rhyne Howard, former WNBA player Cierra Burdick and Van Lith.
Van Lith becomes the first college player to represent Team USA in the 3×3 Olympic competition, but she has very good reason to be included. The two-time All-ACC selection has been playing 3×3 at a high level for years.
She won gold at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, 2019 FIBA 3×3 Under-18 World Cup and 2023 FIBA 3×3 World Cup.
At the youth level, she more than held her own alongside now-WNBA All Star Aliyah Boston and UConn standout Paige Bueckers. In her 2023 gold medal run at the World Cup, Van Lith alongside Burdick, the Sparks’ Cameron Brink and longtime 3×3 player Linnae Harper, went 3-1 in pool play before rattling off four straight wins to earn gold.
She averaged a team-high 6.3 points per game. While this sounds low, the game is played to 21 points and shots inside the arc are worth one point and outside worth two.
Brink was set to play alongside Van Lith and Burdick again, but she tore her ACL in June, leading to Hamby replacing her on the roster.
Team USA is the odds-on favorite to win the gold medal again. But their matchup with Canada on Aug. 2 will be one to watch. Team Canada features a veteran roster which most notably knocked out the USA in the 2022 FIBA 3×3 World Cup before finishing as runners-up.
The 2024 Olympics will begin for the USA 3×3 team on Tuesday, July 30 as they embark on seven pool-play games before heading to a knockout bracket. All games will be played at the Place de la Concorde in Paris.
