Happy Teej 2024: Why is it Celebrated?
Hariyali Teej commemorates the reunion of Mata Parvati with Lord Shiva after her long penance and devotion. Legends say that Mata Parvati performed intense meditation for many lifetimes to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Initially, Lord Shiva, grieving the loss of Mata Sati, was not receptive. However, Mata Parvati’s unwavering devotion impressed him, and he accepted her as his consort. This reunion symbolizes the union of Shiva and Shakti, the divine feminine power, celebrated during Hariyali Teej.

Communities gather to offer prayers to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, often visiting temples for special pujas. Swings, decorated with flowers, are an integral part of the celebration. Women and children enjoy swinging on these beautifully adorned jhulas, which are hung from trees.Applying mehendi is another popular tradition. It is believed that the woman whose henna is the darkest has the most loving husband, blessed by Mata Parvati. Women also wear their finest traditional clothes, often in bright colors like red or green, symbolizing happiness and liveliness.
Hariyali Teej 2024 Sindhara
In some families, married women receive gifts from their parents, known as ‘Sindhara’. This gift typically includes new clothes, sweets, dry fruits, and money. After breaking their fast, women feast on the sweets received as Sindhara and those prepared the previous day, such as milk cake, kalakand, ghewar, and rabri.
