After 10 long years of waiting, it’s time to return to Thedas in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. But as Dragon Age players have been wont to do over the years, gamers are doing so with the face of a brand new hero of their own making: instead of a returning character, once more we’re tasked with saving the world (and looking good doing it) in the form of Rook, a completely new character who can be from a host of different backgrounds and origins. So naturally, we want to know how you made yours your own.
Both myself and io9’s weekend editor Justin Carter have been playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard this week (you can read Justin’s thoughts on his time with the game so far here), and we’re both playing Rogues and both spent a lot of time in the character creator to craft our handsome heroes. But we diverged pretty differently from there: below you can see my Rook, Teyran Aldwir, a former member of the Veil Jumpers who I’ve headcanoned into being one of Thedas’ myriad city Elves, rather than hailing from the wild clans of the Dalish. So he’s not quite as freaked out as every other Elf I’ve encountered so far about the whole “so we accidentally disrupted a ritual that let some of the most assholish of ancient Elven deities loose from their spiritual prison” deal, but he’s going to quip and thwip off a volley of arrows along the way to stopping them nonetheless.
Justin’s Rook, meanwhile, is Bren Laidir, a member of the Lords of Fortune: an international guild of renowned treasure hunters. He’s been playing the game for a bit longer than I have, and has been using Veilguard‘s ability to re-customize your character at any point from the game’s central base of operations, the Lighthouse, to show Bren’s hair growing over the course of his own adventure to stop some evil Elf gods:
I always had a lot of fun making my custom heroes in Dragon Age (except for DAII‘s Hawke, who I always kept in his excellent, uniquely designed default form), but I came away from The Veilguard‘s character creator seriously impressed with just how varied and detailed you could make Rook your own. Dragon Age might not have the depth of cultures to pick from compared to something like Baldur’s Gate 3but the hair and facial modification options are some of the best I’ve seen in a game in a while.
