The Supreme Court of the country has given an important decision regarding the status of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The Supreme Court has said in a majority decision that minority status is not lost merely because the institution was created through law. The bench, while giving its verdict by 4:3 majority, said S. Rejected the 1967 decision of Aziz Basha v. Union of India, which held that an institution created by any law cannot claim to be a minority institution. The court has said that the AMU minority claim will be decided on the basis of who established it. Now a regular bench will decide whether AMU is a minority institution or not.
The minority status of the university was abolished in 1965. In 1967, the university filed a petition in the Supreme Court, which was rejected by the court. Since then the university has been fighting to get minority status.
