As Saawariya completes 17 years, Sanjay Leela Bhansali revealed that the late Rishi Kapoor was upset with him over the film. Rishi believed it would harm Ranbir Kapoor‘s career and demanded to see the footage. Bhansali, however, kept dodging his requests and refused to show any previews, choosing to keep the project under wraps until its release.
An interview in Indian Express stated that Bhansali would avoid showing any footage of Saawariya to Rishi, replying to Neetu Kapoor‘s messages by saying the film wasn’t ready. When Rishi finally watched it, he was upset and feared it would harm Ranbir’s career. Bhansali recounted how Rishi was both stunned and angry upon seeing the film.
Bhansali mentioned that the late actor later admitted to misjudging Saawariya. The film’s unconventional storytelling, unique performances, and distinctive expression puzzled many critics. Bhansali praised his talented cast, highlighting Ranbir and Sonam’s complete surrender to his vision. He also spoke highly of legendary performers like Begum Para and Zohra Sehgal, as well as Rani Mukerji‘s special contribution to the film.
The director shared that he wouldn’t change much about Saawariya, even if he made it today, though there was one aspect he’d keep to himself. The 2007 film received criticism not only for its slow pace but also for its visual style, with many mocking its blue-colored set, calling it a “blue film.”
