It’s too soon to declare Texas football as back — but it’s safe to say the state’s most prominent college football rivalry is.
No. 3 Texas (10-1, 6-1 SEC) faces off against rival No. 19 Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2) in a de facto SEC championship semifinal game for the teams’ first meeting in 13 years. The winner will advance to the SEC championship game the following weekend against No. 6 Georgia, which clinched in Week 13 despite having already completed its conference slate.
The Longhorns and Aggies are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff at Kyle Field in College Station in the first matchup between the programs since 2011.

Texas is coming off a 31-14 win over Kentucky last week, and has won four straight since its lone loss to the Bulldogs on Oct. 19. With a win, the Longhorns could further entrench themselves for a playoff spot, and potentially a first-round bye.
Meanwhile, the Aggies — coming off a 43-41 loss to Auburn in four overtimes last week — enter the game fully in control of their CFP destiny. But they need a win over the Longhorns and, likely, the Bulldogs to win make the playoff as the SEC’s automatic qualifier.
It’s only fitting that the first SEC matchup between Texas and Texas A&M, and the first in 13 years, has so much at stake. Here’s what you need to know about the Texas-Texas A&M football rivalry, including records, stats and more:
Texas and Texas A&M have played 118 times in their respective histories. At the time the rivalry was put in hiatus in 2012, when the Aggies left for the SEC, it was the third-longest college football rivalry in the sport.
The Longhorns lead the all-time series 76-37-5, including a 10-game winning streak between 1957-66. The Aggies’ longest win streak in the series was six games, lasting from 1984-89. The series ran uninterrupted from 1915 until 2011, when the Aggies left the Big 12 for the SEC.
The largest margin of victory in rivalry history came in the teams’ second-ever meeting in 1898, when the Longhorns won 48-0. The last meeting between the two programs came on Nov. 24, 2011, when Justin Tucker hit a game-winning field goal as time expired to give the Longhorns a 27-25 win.

Texas vs Texas A&M on Thanksgiving
The Texas-Texas A&M matchup has been a staple for much of history during the final weekend of the regular season until the teams stopped playing after the 2011 season. Most of the Texas and Texas A&M football matchups have occurred on Thanksgiving day, with 69 games on the holiday.
After both schools joined the Big 12 Conference in 1996, the teams played on Black Friday until 2017. They returned to playing on Thanksgiving from 2008 until the series was paused in 2011. However, a return to the holiday game is unlikely for the rivalrymainly because the NFL moved from two Thanksgiving day games to three in 2006.
Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte, however, expressed a desire for a return to a Thanksgiving day game in February.
“Obviously, this year is gonna be played on Saturday,” Del Conte said. “My goal is that we move that game back to Thursday [Thanksgiving].”
