What is Alabama football playing for in 2024 Iron Bowl?
With an Auburn win comes history for Alabama football.
The Crimson Tide would finish the 2024 season undefeated at home. With a win, Kalen DeBoer would be the first Alabama football coach to beat Auburn in his first Iron Bowl since Dennis Franchione in 2001.
Nick Saban didn’t beat Auburn in his first try, falling to the 25th-ranked Tigers 17-10 on the road in 2007.
It was something Bear Bryant couldn’t do, falling to the second-ranked Tigers 14-8 in Birmingham to end the 1958 season.
Gene Stallings is the only Alabama coach that won a national championship to have led the Crimson Tide to a win against Auburn in his first try: a 16-7 win against the No. 20 Tigers in Birmingham.
With a win against Auburn at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday, DeBoer would join an even shorter list, becoming the second coach in Alabama history to beat Auburn in Tuscaloosa.
Why is Alabama vs Auburn called the ‘Iron Bowl’?
Former Auburn football coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan first coined the phrase in 1964 during an interaction with a group of reporters where one asked how the Tigers would cope the the potential of missing a bowl game.
“We’ve got our bowl game. We have it every year. It’s the Iron Bowl in Birmingham,” Jordan said.
Because of Birmingham’s steel and iron production, and because the Alabama vs. Auburn game was traditionally played at Legion Field, the nickname stuck, even when the game moved to each school’s campus.
