Senior Congress leader and Erode East assembly member EVKS Ilangovan passed away today. He is 75 years old.
He was admitted to the hospital due to ill health.
“E.V.K.S. Elangovan was admitted to the hospital on 13 November 2024. “Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he passed away today (December 14),” Myatt Hospital said.
Following the death of his son Thirumakan, who was in charge of the Erode East constituency, EVKS Ilangovan contested and won the by-election in the constituency in 2023.
“Elangovan is a bold leader who speaks openly. He is a consensus builder. He devoted his entire life to upholding the progressive policies of the Congress Party and father Periyar. He served the people of Tamil Nadu with firm commitment,” said Congress leader Mallikarjuna Kharge
Political travel
Vanda Elangovan, who belonged to a prominent political family in Tamil Nadu, was the grandson of Periyar EV Ramasamy.
EVK Sampath, son of Krishnasamy, brother of Periyar EV Ramasamy. Sampath’s son EVKS Ilangovan continued his political journey with DMK, Congress and Tamil National Party.
Elangovan has held many posts like Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President, Union Minister of State.
After the death of his father EVK Sampad, Elangovan started his political journey by joining the Congress Party. At that time he traveled with Sivaji Ganesan, a prominent Tamil film actor and friend of EVK Sambhat, in the Congress party.
In 1984, Elangovan went to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, contesting from the Sathyamangalam constituency in the AIADMK-Congress alliance.
EVKS Elangovan has so far won twice as Member of Legislative Assembly (Sathiyamangalam, Erode East) and once as Member of Parliament (Kobichettipalayam Constituency, 2004). He contested the parliamentary elections twice and lost.
Ilangovan has twice been the President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee.
He has held the post of Joint Minister of Textiles during the last Congress regime of 2004-2009.
