Live: Australia vs India at the Gabba
47th over – Akash again
Smith is defending right under his eyes.
Akash is halfway through his run-up and Smith pulls away. He’s complaining about something behind the sightscreen, but I certainly can’t see anything untoward up there.
Smith sees out the over. Not an attacking shot played.
46th over – Travis Head facing Jasprit Bumrah
The first ball is short and across Head, who jumps into a slappy cut shot for a single towards point.
Smith is leaving somewhat uncomfortably outside off. But he really does seem to be enjoying this contest more than he has some other innings in recent memory.
He takes another single off his hip.
And Head is shuffling forward in defence to end the over.
45th over – It’s Akash Deep from the other end
Head his whipping to leg and whacking behind point outlandishly, as is his wont.
Smith tries to clips off his pads, but it ends up too straight and directly to mid-on.
KL Rahul moves into a catching mid-wicket position.
And Smith shoulders arms, walking into a ball well wide of off stump. It’s safe, but frustrating to watch.
44th over – We’re back from a feed and Jasprit Bumrah has the ball in hand
Steve Smith is on strike, sitting on 25, comfortably his highest score of the series thus far.
He’s walking around and pushing to mid-off.
A big swing and a miss outside off and his legs were slipping and sliding all over the place.
Four runs. Off the inside edge of Smith as he pushes outside off and the ball flies just over the top of the stumps and too wide for Rishabh Pant.
Smith gets a single behind square leg and Travis Head gets his first look at Bumrah in this session.
He opens his post-lunch account with a tidy clip off his pads for a single wide of mid-on.
Lunch: Australia 3-104 (Head 20, Smith 25)
Three wickets for India.
76 runs for Australia.
Honours even you’d have to say.
Although the real winners will have to be the capacity crowd at the Gabba, who have seen an enthralling two-and-a-half hours of cricket there to kick off their day.
Both teams are still right in this – although Indian supporters may be concerned that their over-worked bowling line up, backing up so soon after getting through a mountain of work in Adelaide, are starting to break down a little bit.
Steve Smith has shown some glimpses, so too has series leading run scorer Travis Head.
As long as the weather holds we’re in for a fascinating day.
43rd over – Deep carries on
Head drives square and will pick up a couple. Good shot. Siraj actually did well to stop overthrows.
Head gets one off his thigh pad and away for a single.
Nicely played from Smith, clipping to cover and taking off for a quick single.
The two men deep on the leg side are quite close together at a wide-ish fine leg and a deep backward square leg.
Head defends into the off side for no run.
Head clips to mid on, where Siraj makes a decent diving stop. He lies on the ground with the ball in hand, beaming from ear-to-ear at having denied his nemesis a couple of runs.
A bouncer ends the over, and the session.
42nd over – Bumrah continues
Smith defends to mid on. No run.
Now he’s able to clip the ball away for a single to backward square leg.
There are three men out on the boundary for Head, two on the leg side, one on the off and it’s that man at deep point who fields as Head drives square.
Smith steps across to the off side and lets the ball fly past him at above waist height.
Now he’s defending solidly.
Down the leg side, Smith leaves it alone and that’s over.
They’ll squeeze another one in at least before lunch.
41st over – Deep carries on
Head defends.
Meanwhile Bumrah is actually getting some attention paid to his feet on the bench… We’ll keep our eye on that.
SWING AND A MISS! Deep has Head cutting but he misses it, the ball flying just past the edge.
SWING AND A MISS! Another ball that Head wants to cut but misses, Akash Deep is really asking questions of Travis Head here, challenging his temperament.
Now the fuller ball, Head defends off his pads.
BEAT! Head tries to drive but misses the ball, which flies past his outside edge and the outside of off stump. Head is playing with fire here.
Head defends back down the pitch to end the over.
Meanwhile, Bumrah comes back onto the ground and appears to be ready to bowl his next over, so nothing lasting wrong with him.
40th over – Bumrah comes in again
Those steps, gradually building to a run and then Bumrah flings the ball down the pitch to Head, who defends. It’s a no ball though so they’ll have to do it all again.
Bouncer from Bumrah, Head gets well under it. The umpire just has a word with Bumrah there – not sure what about though.
Solid defence from Head this time.
Bumrah ambles in and bowls another that Head defends.
There is rain falling again, not too heavy, but it’s there.
That’s a remarkable stroke, Head looking to defend and then flashing the ball backward of point for a single, a rapid twist of his wrists sending the ball towards the rope. Remarkable hand speed which translates to some magnificent bat speed too. It was another no ball from Bumrah – his 15th of the series.
Smith defends as the rain fades to nothing more than a sprinkle.
Smith defends again.
Smith defends again.
And here comes Mohammed Siraj, back out onto the ground, to a mix of applause, cheers and boos from the crowd. Meanwhile, Bumrah goes off, presumably to get the choicest selection at the lunch buffet.
Lunch is at the usual time
Thanks for the blog as always. Just wondering what time lunch is? I’m getting hungry…

Which for this Test is 12:20 local, so about 20 minutes or so.
39th over – Deep carries on
Two slips, a gully, fine leg, deep backward point, cover, mid on and off and midwicket in place for the first ball, which Head defends.
Now midwicket has gone to deep backward square leg, as Head defends a straight one, the double bluff of a short pitched delivery being held back for now.
Head drives on the up, rising to meet the ball and gets a single to deep backward point.
Smith only has one deep fielder, at fine leg, as everyone else comes up close. Smith defends into the covers for no run.
Smith leaves the next ball he faces.
Deep’s speed is up at 135 pretty consistently at the moment, as Smith leaves the last outside off.
38th over – Bumrah has switched ends
If Siraj can’t carry on, India’s bowling stocks will be severely tested.
Head leaves the first outside off.
A single on the pull there from Head.
Two slips and a gully for Smith, who gets an inside edge to fine leg for a single. India’s fielders all fling up their hands.
FOUR! Sumptuous from Head! He punched that through the covers with a whip-like crack that echoed around the packed Gabba.
Head pulls now and will run three to deep square leg. The ball was aerial but safe.
Smith defends with a straight bat to end the over – and instantly requests more new gloves.
37th over – Deep will complete Siraj’s over
BIG APPEAL! That’s a massive appeal from Deep! And no wonder! That looks very, very out unless he’s hit it! India are not going to review it for some reason, so perhaps they think he hit it.
Deep appealed as if he was trying to simultaneously wave down a fire truck, while putting the fire out with a towel. It was truly spectacular.
Smith defends the next couple after all that excitement.
And he leaves the last, a late decision it seems.
The rain, by the way, has stopped and the sun is back out, so a great call to keep playing.
37th over – Siraj steams in
Bowls outside off and Smith leaves it alone. Smith looks up at the sky. Nobody is moving from the lower tier, so it can’t be too heavy.
Smith clips off his pads for a couple to backward square leg.
Now there is a delay, but it’s for Mohammed Siraj, who has called for some treatment. He grabbed his left knee.
And he’s actually having to go off.
This is bad news for India.
He’s talking to Virat Kohli as he walks off and just pointed out towards the boundary where he was fielding, so perhaps he tweaked something out there?
36th over – Reddy will bowl another
He’s been good so far, has Reddy.
Head looks to drive him positively down the ground but can’t get the ball away.
He does it again, this time making even less contact with the ball in terms of sending it off the square.
FOUR! That’s where Head is so good, cutting late forward of square and through cover for a boundary.
Head leathers another one, down on one knee slashing it to deep point, where Siraj is waiting. Just a single.
Smith now clips off his pads and gets a single.
Head looks to hook one down the leg side, but doesn’t make contact. Or does he? The Indian players are keen on this one… will they have a look? No they won’t. And a good job too, because he didn’t hit it.
And it’s raining… It’s light at the moment and we’ll play on.
35th over – Siraj continues
Smith leaves outside off.
And new he defends back down the pitch.
BIG APPEAL! Smith lets the ball hit his pad and the Indian players are really excited about this! They’re going to review it. Siraj wanted the review and was gesturing for it furiously, and his skipper obliges him.
OH MY THAT’S CLOSE! The ball would have clipped the off stump according to ball tracking, but it’s umpires call. My, my, my.
There is movement down by the groundstaff’s area as the clouds come over and obscure the sun…
Smith gets a massive inside edge and takes off for a single. Siraj lost his towel in that delivery too.
Head clips the first away. And now clips the second too, for a single this time.
It’s got really spicy out there for a little bit.
34th over – Reddy has four to come
Travis Head is the new man in.
Two slips and a gilly, Head clips off his pads to short midwicket for no run.
Head punches the next one positively to cover. No run.
Travis Head had endured a really bad trot at the Gabba in Test matches, four balls, four wickets, so he’ll be glad to have shaken that off.
He defends another one.
Head again punches to cover for no run.
EDGED! MARNUS HAS TO GO!
Big wicket for India!
Marnus attempted the extravagant drive, gets a thick edge to Virat Kohli at second slip, who takes a good grab above his head.
Marnus has to go for 12, the partnership ends on 37.
Australia 3-75.
34th over – Reddy continues
Wonderful from Smith, clipping off his pads through to deep midwicket. They are going to run three. Oh Bumrah has got himself in a right tangle down on the rope. He looks to be OK, despite suffering massive bruising to his ego after almost dragging the ball onto his leg as he stumbled over the rope.
