Hyderabad:Hyderabad is reeling under a severe cold wave, with temperatures dropping to unusually low levels. Moula Ali and the University of Hyderabad recorded the lowest temperatures at 7.2°C, followed by BHEL area at 7.4°C, marking the coldest temperatures Hyderabad has seen in recent years.
The previously recorded lowest temperature in Hyderabad was 6.1°C way back in 1966.
According to temperature readings at 8.30 am, other areas, which were colder than usual, included Rajendranagar 8.2°C, Gachibowli 9.3°C and West Marredpally 9.9°C. Even the generally warmer neighborhoods like Jeedimetla, Shapur Nagar and Bowenpally reported temperatures between 11°C and 12°C.
Many residents found it difficult to step out with temperatures in places like Madhapur, Kukatpally and Hayathnagar ranging between 12.8°C and 13.3°C. Nampally was slightly warmer at 13.8°C but the chill was felt everywhere.
“The cold weather is making it difficult for me to wear a sari to school every day. The chill is really challenging, especially with the need to dress traditionally in the morning,” said a Teacher
Despite the chill, many are finding ways to enjoy the cold weather. “I’ve been making hot tea and enjoying the warmth at home, the weather is perfect for staying cozy inside,” said Amulya, a homemaker.
At orphanages and old-age homes, the cold has added extra challenges.
The staff members have been providing additional blankets and warm clothes to protect the inmates. “The elderly are having a tough time with the cold, but we’re giving them extra blankets and making sure that they stay inside. Many people are also coming forward and distributing blankets,” said a caretaker at Sri Lakshmi old-age home in Secunderabad.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department-Hyderabad, the change in weather was because of northeasterly winds prevailing over the state. However, officials anticipate a slight rise in temperatures next week, along with the possibility of rainfall.
