Passenger vehicle manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has made history by producing 2 million vehicles in a single calendar year. Maruti is the first and only OEM in India, and among Suzuki Motor Corporation’s global manufacturing facilities, to achieve this milestone, solidifying its dominance in the Indian automobile industry.
The landmark 2 millionth car, an Ertiga, was manufactured at the company’s Manesar facility in Haryana. With nearly 60% of the vehicles produced in Haryana and 40% in Gujarat, the top manufactured models were the Baleno, Fronx, Ertiga, WagonR, and Brezza.
Reflecting on this achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “The 2 million production milestone is a testament to India’s manufacturing potential and our dedication to the ‘Make in India’ initiative.” Reaffirming Maruti’s commitment to the initiative, Takeuchi extended his gratitude to customers, employees, suppliers, and value chain partners.
Expanding production capacity
With three manufacturing facilities—two in Gurgaon and Manesar, Haryana, and one in Hansalpur, Gujarat—Maruti currently has a combined annual production capacity of 2.35 million units. Considering the rising demand, Maruti aims to expand its production capacity to 4 million units per year.
The company has outlined key projects to facilitate this expansion, including a new greenfield manufacturing facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana, with an annual production capacity of 2.5 lakh units. Expected to be fully operational by 2025, the Kharkhoda facility is planned to achieve a capacity of 1 million units per year. With additional plans to establish more greenfield manufacturing facilities, Maruti Suzuki continues to align with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
At present, Maruti Suzuki plays a pivotal role in India’s automobile exports, contributing nearly 40% of passenger vehicle exports. The company has been India’s top passenger vehicle exporter for three consecutive years, exporting 17 models—including the Fronx, Jimny, Baleno, Dzire, and Swift—to around 100 countries worldwide.
