Toyota currently has four rebadged Maruti models in its India lineup – Glanza, Hyryder, Taisor, and Rumion – and together, they make up as a much as 54 percent of Toyota’s total sales in the country. Among these, the Hyryder midsize SUV (rebadged Grand Vitara) is the highest selling model, accounting for up to 37 percent of the rebadged models.

In fact, the share of Maruti-rebadged models is only increasing over time. In April this year, it accounted for 44 percent of total sales, and it increased up to 52 percent by August 2024.

Following Toyota Corp’s global product-sharing pact with Suzuki Corp, Maruti-rebadged models have paid off handsomely for Toyota in the Indian market. The four rebadged models saw cumulative wholesales of 109,352 units between April-November 2024, accounting for 54 percent of Toyota’s total wholesales of 203,555 units (up 33 percent YoY).
In FY2024, of the two rebadged models – Gloss and Hyryder – the Glanza with 52,262 units was ahead of the Hyryder (48,916 units). In the current fiscal’s first eight months, the Hyryder is ahead of the Glanza, which has seen a decline which is in keeping with the overall hatchback industry trend. The Hyryder was also the second-highest selling model overall, accounting for 20 percent of total sales in between April-November 2024.
Meanwhile, the Taisor compact SUVwhich was launched in April this year with deliveries beginning in May, has clocked cumulative seven-month wholesales of 20,208 units till end-November 2024. The Rumion MPV racked up 14,267 units in between April-November, 2024.
Toyota Innova twins continue to be the top seller
The Innova MPV twins – Crysta and Hycross – continue to be the biggest contributors to Toyota’s sales and at an estimated 69,419 units, they account for 34 percent of the company’s total wholesale dispatches till end-November 2024. Last month saw the Innova Hycross, which has completed two years since its launch, cross 100,000 wholesale units, highlighting the sustained demand for the MPV across the country, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. The Fortuner with over 21,000 was ranked fourth in terms of overall sales.
In the first eight months of the ongoing fiscal, Toyota has dispatched an estimated 203,555 units, which constitutes strong 33 percent year-on-year growth (April-November 2023: 152,758 units). This result to an average monthly sales of 25,444 units in April-November 2024 compared to 19,094 units in the year-ago period.
