The Tamil Nadu Tourism Department organised a grand Pongal festival at the Poompuhar Tourism Complex in Sirkazhi taluk, with Collector A.P. Mahabharathi participating in the celebration.
The event was held in the presence of Poompuhar MLA Nivedha M. Murugan and Sirkazhi MLA M. Panneerselvam.
Mr. Mahabharathi highlighted the State government’s efforts to promote tourism. He said the Poompuhar complex, a site rich in historical and cultural significance, was undergoing extensive renovations at a cost of ₹23.6 crore. “The first phase of the work is 85% complete, and the remaining tasks are expected to conclude by February. Within two months, Poompuhar will emerge as a key tourist destination”.
He recalled Poompuhar’s prominence during the Sangam era as a thriving port city engaged in maritime trade with several countries. He further announced plans to enhance tourism in surrounding areas such as Kodiyampalayam and Therizhandur. Restoration work was also underway at the Danish Fort in Tharangambadi, with a budget of ₹10 crore. “Once these projects are complete, Mayiladuthurai district will emerge as a premier tourist destination,” he added.
The festivities included folk art performances and activities that highlighted the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu.
