Imran Khan was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment while his wife Bushra got 7 years jail as punishment in the Al-Qadir Trust case in Pakistan.
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment in the £190m Al-Qadir Trust case, while his wife Bushra Bibi has been awarded a jail term of 7 years.
Bushra Bibi was arrested from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023. She was present to hear the decision.
The case relates to the misuse of authority and corruption involving Khan’s Al-Qadir University Project Trust.
The duo were indicted in the case on February 27 last year, shortly after the controversial general elections. Imran Khan was incarcerated in August 2023 in connection with a series of legal cases, which he has dubbed as “politically motivated.”
In 2024, he was acquitted in the Cipher and Iddat cases but faced fresh charges in the Toshakhana 2 case in December.
What Is The Al-Qadir Trust Case?
The case was filed by Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) which alleged that Khan played a “pivotal role” in the illicit transfer of funds that were intended for the state of Pakistan but were deposited into an account designated for land payments by Bahria Town Karachi.
The case alleges that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi received billions of (Pakistani) rupees and land spanning hundreds of kanals from Bahria Town Ltd in exchange for legalising Rs50 billion, which had been identified and repatriated to Pakistan by the United Kingdom during the previous PTI government.
Originally scheduled for December 23, the verdict in the case was deferred by an Islamabad accountability court to January 6, citing winter vacations as the reason for the postponement.
The NAB claimed that despite giving multiple opportunities to justify his act and provide further details, Khan deliberately, with mala fide intention, refused to give information on one pretext or another.
Property tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain and his son Ahmed Ali Riaz, Mirza Shehzad Akbar, and Zulfi Bukhari are also among the suspects in this reference. They didn’t join the investigation and subsequent court proceedings, they absconded and were subsequently declared proclaimed offenders (PO).
