Rishabh Pant will lead Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025. The 27-year-old Indian wicketkeeper-batter was announced as LSG’s captain by franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka on Monday, January 20. Pant was signed by the Lucknow-based franchise for Rs 27 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Pant has served as Delhi Capitals captain in the past. He led the Delhi-based franchise in IPL 2021, 2022, and 2024.
Pant will be the fourth player to captain LSG in the IPL. Before him, KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya, and Nicholas Pooran had captained Lucknow Super Giants in the world’s richest franchise cricket league.
In an exclusive chat with Star Sports, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka announced Pant as the team’s captain.
“Very simple and that is about announcing the captain of LSG for the future and that is Rishabh Pant. We have decided on that the moment we won him in the auction but we were waiting for the moment to announce it together,” Sanjeev Goenka said.
According to Goenka, the franchise had kept the budget of Rs 27 crore the 27-year-old.
“We had kept a budget of Rs 27 crore for Rishabh Pant. We were adamant at getting him (during IPL auction). Rishabh Pant isn’t just going to be the best player of LSG but of IPL itself. Never seen someone with so much passion. He’s the boy next door, his connect with the players, teams and thought process is different. Conventional thought process lacks uniqueness. I see him as a leader. He will probably be the best captain IPL has seen,” he added.
Speaking about his captaincy style, Pant said, “One aspect of my captaincy is to be very pro-active. It’s something that I have learned more in the past 1-2 years. It makes communication with players better. There are a lot of international players – aligning the thought process with them – is the biggest challenge. It’s a give and take. I like to play percentage cricket. Sanjiv sir also has the same thought process. You don’t have to win every match – if you win 60-70 per cent of your matches, you are still there. Over expectations shouldn’t ruin your season.”
