Concerns of a possible ‘Quad-emic’, with the rise and spread of four viruses causing flu, COVID, RSV, and norovirus infection, are looming over the United States. The cases of flu, covid, and RSV are on the rise, and according to the US Centers For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC), emergency room visits for flu and RSV remain alarmingly high.
The cases of norovirus have climbed to decade-high levels in the recent weeks. “The total number of outbreaks reported during this 2024–2025 season is above those reported during the same period during 2012–2020 and 2021-2024,” the CDC spokesperson said. Experts say that the numbers would climb in the upcoming weeks.
Prevention is key, especially in vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, individuals with compromised immune systems, and the elderly.
How to protect older adults from the Quad-emic?
Older adults, especially those aged 65 and above, are more susceptible to severe outcomes from viral infections. This is because of the age-related natural weakening of their immune system. This could further weaken the fight against these viruses, Also, as many older adults have chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, or respiratory illnesses, the risk of complications would surge in cases of infection. COVID, flu, and RSV can lead to severe complications like trouble breathing, chest pain, dizziness, or confusion in them.
Older adults are more prone to complications from a norovirus infection. The CDC says that the virus has caused around 900 deaths in the U.S. each year, and most of them were people aged 65 and older.
- Vaccination: Getting vaccinated against severe illnesses for COVID-19, flu, and RSV will help older adults prevent infection.
- Masks: Use masks to prevent catching air-borne illnesses.
- Washing hands: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially to prevent norovirus. Hand sanitizer is less effective against this virus.
- Social distancing: Just like the social distancing we practiced during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s best to avoid crowded spaces and gatherings.
- Caution around sick family members: Be mindful of sick grandchildren or other family members.
Adhering to preventive measures can help older adults stay safe. Also, being concious about one’s health, and seeking medical help in case of any illness is crucial.
