Parliament Budget Session 2025 live: A Congress MP in Rajya Sabha questioned the government on whether it was aware of the deportation of around 104 “illegal” Indian migrants from the US, highlighting concerns over their 40-hour-long journey with only one toilet, despite the presence of women and children.

Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla expressed his concerns, saying, “The way they were brought in was wrong. They were humiliated. Their hands and feet were chained. When our government already knew that they were going to be deported, then they should have sent a commercial flight to bring them back.”

Aujla further added, “They went there illegally, but they did not commit any huge crime after going there… We have given a notice to the Speaker and there may be a discussion on this.”

Parliament Budget Session 2025 live: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticised the government over the deportation of Indians living “illegally” in the United States and called for answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S Jaishankar.

“A lot of things were said that Modi ji and Trump ji are very good friends. Why did Modi ji let this happen, couldn’t we have sent our plane to get them?” Priyanka Gandhi said.

“Is this the way one should be behaving with people that they are sent back in handcuffs and chains?” she questioned.

When asked if the external affairs minister should respond, she said, “He should answer, the PM should give an answer. Is this the way?”

Labelling it as ‘fake,’ the agency clarified that the image did not involve Indian migrants, and the photograph actually showed individuals deported to Guatemala, not India.

In a post on X, PIB Fact Check said, “A #Fake image is being shared on social media by many accounts with a claim that illegal Indian migrants have been handcuffed and their legs chained while being deported by the US.”

Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala slammed the government over job creation amid US deportation of illegal Indian immigrants.

“More than 7.25 lakh Indian citizens went to the US in search of a better life… They had to go there to earn for their families because PM Modi’s government ran away from the promise of creating 2 crore jobs annually and there is 40% unemployment in the country… They were chained for 40 hours, loaded on container ships, and not allowed to use toilets… Are Indian citizens terrorists? Why is the government silent?… Thousands of our Indian brothers and sisters are imprisoned in US detention centers… How will they be brought back? Why can’t PM Modi say that Indians have contributed to the growth of America and they should be allowed to work? If this cannot be done, we demand that they be brought back with respect and given employment,” he told ANI.

They were all handcuffed, and their basic humanitarian rights were denied. India and the US have diplomatic ties. Why should our people be treated this way when being sent back? “If you are in the US illegally, the US has the right to deport you, and if your identity as an Indian is confirmed, then India has an obligation to accept you. So, in both cases, there really isn’t much debate. However, it wasn’t good to hear that they were brought back forcibly in a military plane, handcuffed, and so on. That was quite unnecessary. It should have been enough to put them on a commercial aircraft or civilian plane and send them back. If you want to do a mass deportation, do it on civilian charters. That would have been the more humane thing to do. They may have broken your laws by entering your country, but by and large, they have no bad intentions. They are not criminals, and they are not convicted of anything else. They are there to make a better life for themselves, which they attempted by violating your laws. So, you can send them out. But handcuffing them, putting them on a military aircraft, and sending them this way— I think India should say that this is not entirely advisable,” he added.

“Absolutely anguished by the inhumane treatment meted out to the Indians who have been deported from the United States and brought to Amritsar. They are not criminals; they may have illegally entered the US in search of a better life. The first question that needs to be addressed, for which there are no answers so far, is whether the due process of law available in the US was followed for their deportation. If they are to be deported, why was there a need to handcuff them, shackle them for hours, and make them eat food with their hands in handcuffs? This is absolutely inhumane and medieval. We are not living in barbaric times; every person has the right to be treated with human dignity. Yes, you don’t want them in your country. Ostensibly, they entered illegally. You are sending them back, and the Government of India is taking them back, but at least send them back with dignity and respect. I fail to understand how the Government, at the level of the PM and the Foreign Minister, can countenance such inhumane treatment of Indian citizens,” he said.

Parliament Budget Session 2025 live: Speaking to news agency ANI about the deportation of illegal Indian migrants from the US, Congress MP Manickam Tagore said, “It is very painful and humiliating to see Indians being chained and brought back to India…Why is this government silent?…Government should strongly condemn it. They (deported Indian nationals) might have been there illegally, they might have been cheated by agents, but humiliating them and inhumane behaviour is unacceptable. Therefore, we want a statement from EAM Jaishankar…He must make a statement in Parliament. We will raise it in the Parliament.”

Parliament Budget Session 2025 live: Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury has given a Suspension of Business Notice in Rajya Sabha under Rule 267.

The notice seeks discussion on the deportation of Indian nationals who were allegedly living illegally in the US.

The Motion says, “The entire exercise of reportedly deporting 20,407 Indian immigrants could have coordinated better with the Indian authorities and in a humane manner. I request that the Government of India use diplomatic channels to ensure that.”

Parliament Budget Session 2025 live: Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh gives Suspension of Business Notice in Rajya Sabha to discuss the deportation of Indian nationals who were allegedly illegally living in the US.

On Wednesday, a US C-17 military aircraft arrived in Amritsar with 104 Indian immigrants. This was the first group of Indians deported by the Donald Trump administration.

The deportation was part of a crackdown the administration pledged to implement after taking office last month.

The Motion reads, “This crisis also underscores the necessity of robust policies to prevent illegal migration and create structured legal avenues for those seeking employment abroad. There is an urgent need for intervention to dismantle human trafficking networks, provide financial and social reintegration support to deportees, and establish transparent migration frameworks to protect Indians from such predicaments in the future. The government must act decisively to safeguard the interests of thousands affected and uphold India’s diplomatic credibility.”
