The re-releases of Sanam Teri Kasam and Interstellar created history at the Indian box office, completely dominating the weekend collections.
The romantic drama sanam teri kasam, starring Harshvardhan rane and Mawra hocanewhich had a rather poor run at the box office 9 years ago, managed to pull off a blockbuster opening weekend upon its re-release. The movie bowed out of theatres with a lifetime net collection of Rs 9 crore, however, on its rerelease in cinemas on February 7, it witnessed an extraordinary reception.
According to sacnilk, the film collected approximately Rs 4.25 crore on its first day, followed by Rs 5.25 crore on Saturday, and an impressive Rs 6 crore on Sunday. This took its opening weekend collection to Rs 15.50 crore—over 170% higher than its original lifetime earnings. Sanam Teri Kasam not only outperformed new Bollywood releases like Badass Ravikumar and Loveyapa, but also stunned trade gurus with its sold-out shows across several cinemas in the country. With the Valentine’s Day weekend ahead, the film is expected to continue its strong run.Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar also saw a phenomenal response upon its re-release, much credit to his loyal fan base in the country. The sci-fi epic grossed approximately Rs 2.40 crore on Friday, Rs 3.25 crore on Saturday, and another Rs 3.25 crore on Sunday, closing its opening weekend at Rs 9 crore. With this, Interstellar has now crossed the Rs 50 crore gross mark in India, including earnings from its original run.
The film’s limited 7-day re-release is expected to take its total collection to around Rs 15 crore, an impressive feat for a Hollywood re-release in India.
The response to both Sanam Teri Kasam and Interstellar helped the films score a joint total of Rs 24 crore over the weekend. This was much higher than the Rs 10.60 crore earned by the newer releases over the weekend.
Both films will have a week to rake in the big bucks before they face new competition from the Vicky Kaushal starrer Chhaava and the Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford led Captain America: Brave New World which hits screens in time for Valentine’s weekend.
