You save up your hard-earned money to invest in a new graphics card for your PC, snagged your new prized possession, and life is good. You’re gaming with smooth renders, negligible latency, and blistering frame rate. Or are you? If you own one of 9000 series RDNA 4 GPUs that’s not the case except for a select few games. It turns out that AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR 4) technology, which is the magic sauce of AMD’s GPUs and their answer to Nvidia’s DLSS, doesn’t work with a large swath of games. That includes popular titles like Devil IV and Silent Hill 2. And if you own an older AMD card, you’re S.O.L. as there’s no word if your hardware will get FSR 4 anytime soon or at all.
However, according to PCWorld, a solution does exist — if you own one of the 9000 series cards. An enterprising modder named HighYield recently posted a video showing off their new OptiScaler app. When used, the app enables FSR 4 on any game that support Nvidia’s DLSS 2 or Intel’s XeSS upscaling software. Best of all, it’s free. OptiScaler will also enable frame generation and some anti-latency support. You know, the stuff you should have gotten from day one when you plunked down $600 or more for your shiny new Radeon 9070 XT card.
As of right now, FSR 4, which AMD claims brings a ”substantial image quality improvement” over FSR 3.1, is exclusive to the company’s 9000-series owners, and with only 44 games currently supporting the technology compared to the over 100 titles getting Nvidia DLSS 4 support, that leaves a lot of fans of popular games like Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2 and Star Wars: Jedi Survivorout in the cold.
If you visit HighYield’s X account, there’s a detailed walkthrough of setting up the OptiScaler app to enable FSR 4 on games like Cyberpunk 2077. For OptiScaler to work, you must have either an Radeon RX 9070 or 9070 XT card and DirectX 12 installed. During the demo video, HighYield shows off Cyberpunk 2077 playing at 1440p at 60 frames per second with full path tracing. And before you say it’s a fluke, other YouTube videos are popping up showing similar results. So for, OptiScaler can tide you over while AMD works to expand the catalog for FSR 4 with more games hopefully coming sooner than later.
But the keyword here is mod. That means this workaround is not AMD approved. Which means the fix might not work perfectly at times, and there might be a time where AMD puts the kibosh on the app as FSR 4 starts rolling out to more games.
