The Indian scooter industry has achieved record wholesales of 6.85 million units in the financial year that ended on March 31, 2025 (FY2025), a 17 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase. What helped drive the numbers was manufacturers rolling out refreshed and new models, revival of demand from rural India and semi-urban regions and the sale of over 7.73 lakh electric scooters.

Indian scooter market records its best ever sales since FY2018
While Honda Activa remains the market leader with a 42 percent market share, TVS follows with a jump in its share to 26 percent. Bajaj Auto doubled its share to 4 percent even as Yamaha and Ather Energy registered strong sales. EV 2-wheelers also recorded over 7.73 lakh units and an 11 percent share of overall scooter sales.
The Indian scooter market’s best fiscal year performance was in FY2018– 6.71 million units. FY2025 scooter sales have exceeded that total by over 1.33 lakh units, averaging monthly sales of over 5.71 lakh units or registering sales of well over 18,500 scooters every day.
The industry hit a monthly high of over 7.21 lakh units in festive season– October 2024, surpassed 6 lakh units twice (August and September 2024) and over 5 lakh units eight times, with the lowest monthly score being December 2024— 4.18 lakh. The time when buyers prefer to defer their purchase decisions to the new year.
Honda retains no.1 position but TVS, Bajaj auto and Ather Energy increase their market share
TVS sold a total of 1.83 million, whereas Honda sold 2.84 million units in the same time frame.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter Indiamaintains its vice-like grip with a 41.50 percent share with sales of 2.84 million units in FY2025, up by 12 percent. Honda’s scooter portfolio comprises the Activa 110 and Activa 125 as well as the Dio 110 and Dio 125. However, year-on-year, Honda’s market share is down 2 percent from the 43.33 percent it had in FY2024.
TVS Motor Cowhich has the Jupiter 110, Jupiter 125, ntorq and Zest in its scooter stable, sold a total of 1.83 million scooters, up 25 percent YoY. This gives it a 26 percent market share, up 1 percent on the 25 percent it had in FY2024. While the four ICE scooters have sold over 15.40 lakh units, up 22 percent YoY, the TVS iQube electric scooter with over 2.73 lakh units has clocked 44 percent YoY growth.
Suzuki Motorcycle India has also fared well. With over 10.24 lakh units, Suzuki scooter sales recorded a YoY increase of 15 percent. The Access remains its best-selling product
Hero MotoCorp sold over 3.91 lakh scooters in FY2025, it has posted a 2 percent YoY decline. Hero’s scooter range comprises the 110cc Pleasure and Zero, 125cc Destinations/Destinations along with recently launched Zero 125 and the ZER 160. These together have sold just under 3.33 lakh units, down 12 percent YoY. The company however has achieved strong gains with its Life v1 and V2 electric scooters – the 58,500 EVs are a 195 percent increase YoY on a low year-ago base of just under 20,000 Vidas.
Yamaha with just under 3.10 lakh units, has posted 13 percent growth but sees its scooter market share reduce marginally to 4.51 percent from 4.71 percent a year ago. The 125cc Charm and Ray ZR have together sold over 2.86 lakh units, up by 12 percent YoY. The 155cc Aerox scooter, with over 22,000 units has registered 24 percent growth.
Bajaj carjust like TVS and Ather Energy is among the three EV OEMs to have increased their scooter market share. It sold a total of over 2.77 lakh scooters in FY2025. This is a YoY increase of 140 percent which roughly translates into an additional 1.61 lakh units YoY, and resultantly a doubling of market share to 4 percent.
Ather Energywhich is witnessing strong sales traction for its Rush family e-scooter, clocked total wholesales of over 1.55 lakh units, up 44 percent. This performance sees it increase its market share to 2.26 percent from the earlier 1.85 percent in FY2024.

EV 2-wheeler sales witness exponential growth
The three legacy players – TVS Motor Co, Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp – as well as Ather Energy have each registered best-ever fiscal year sales. Interestingly, Bajaj Auto has beaten TVS Motor Co in cumulative e2W wholesales. While Bajaj Auto sold a total of over 2.77 lakh e-2Ws, TVS sold just over 2.73 lakh EVs comprising the iQube.
Ather Energy also hit a high note with over 1.55 lakh units as did Hero MotoCorp with over 58,000 Vida V1 and V2 e-scooters.
