‘Omkara’ is surely one of the best Bollywood crime drama movies and has earned a cult following among film buffs. The character Ishwar ‘Langda’ Tyagi is surely the standout one and was played by the versatile actor Saif Ali Khan. Here, let’s take a look at an interesting trivia about the movie directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.
In a recent interview, writer Robin Bhatt revealed that Bollywood superstar Aamir khan was initially keen to play the role of Langda Tyagi in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 2006 film ‘Omkara’. However, after discussions, the filmmakers felt that Aamir wasn’t the right fit for the part, eventually leading them to cast Saif Ali Khan.
“Aamir was ready to do the villain’s role”
‘Omkara’, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Othello, starred Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles. According to Robin, after finalizing Ajay for the titular role and Kareena as Dolly, they faced a dilemma regarding the crucial character of Langda Tyagi.Speaking to Friday Talkies, Robin said, “Aamir was ready to do the villain’s role. The second choice we had was Saif Ali Khan. However, at one point, we decided that Aamir was not the right choice for the film.”
This challenge came up
The team then approached Saif, but a new challenge arose, his lack of fluency in the rustic western Uttar Pradesh dialect required for the character. Robin shared that Saif did not shy away from the hard work. To transform into Langda Tyagi, Saif not only chopped his hair but also took intensive language lessons. Deepak Dobriyalwho also acted in ‘Omkara’, became Saif’s language coach and would spend hours rehearsing with him.
The actor’s commitment paid off, as Saif’s performance as Langda Tyagi was hailed as one of the finest in his career, earning him widespread acclaim and awards.
On the work front, Aamir Khan was last seen in the drama movie ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and Saif Ali Khan was last seen in the Telugu action flick ‘Devara’. Unfortunately both the films failed to impress the audiences.
