Elden Ring Nightreign features eight playable character classes, but two of them are unavailable when you first start the game. The Duchess can be unlocked once you’ve found a Timepiece (usually by beating or possibly even just attempting to defeat the first Nightlord). The second character, the Revenant, is a little bit more mysterious, and below you can find our guide to unlocking her as a playable Nightfarer.
Where to Find the Besmirched Frame
Much like the Duchess, the key to unlocking the Revenant lies within a unique Relic, but this class won’t be as easy to unlock.
Once you’ve defeated your first Nightlord by undertaking the Tricephalos Expedition, be sure to check out the Jar Merchant in Roundtable Hold, who sells a variety of Gestures, Relics, and Relic Holders. One Relic in particular is unique: A Besmirched Frame. it costs 1,500 Murk, which you can obtain after the end of an Expedition. The farther you get, the more Murk you’ll be rewarded, and you can also sell unwanted Relics when customizing your Vessel to gain more Murk quickly.
Note that this relic can also appear in the Jar Merchant’s inventory once you have unlocked the Duchess, in case you are having issues defeating Gladius, Beast of Night.
Once you’ve purchased this strange relic, check your map of Roundtable Hold. You’ll find a new character portrait has appeared, over in the east wing just off the main center room.
Enter the room to find a strange ghostly figure of a short female doll staring at a painting.
When you interact with the figure, your current character will be transported back to the tutorial area in Limveld. Only this time, instead of Margit the Fell Omen, you’ll have to fight this Revenant, or as the boss fight refers to her, the Night Idol.
Boss Fight – Night Idol
In order to unlock the Revenant as a playable character class, you’ll need to defeat her — and her three spectral allies. The Revenant has the ability to summon three spirits: an agile, rapier-wielding Page, a burly Pumpkin Head with a sledgehammer, and the stationary torso of a giant skeleton.
Make no mistake, this fight is still very tough, as you’ll only have the default loadout of whatever class you selected before interacting with the ghostly spirit. However, if you fail, you’ll be able to interact with the spirit to try again as many times as you like. You’ll only have 3 Health Flasks, but on the plus side you’ll be level 6. The downside is the fight is effectively a 4v1, so it will take a bit of strategizing to survive.
One of the most important things to note is that all four enemies rarely attack you at once. The Page is the most aggressive, and will dash toward you with its rapier, allowing you to bait it away from the others.
The Pumpkin Head will also advance, but at a much slower rate, and you can try to keep it in view when dealing with the Page to make sure you aren’t blindsided.
The giant skeleton won’t move from where it’s summoned at the back of the arena, and for most of the fight it will only try to slam its hand down on you if you get close. You can use this to your advantage and focus on your other opponents, but be warned that if you defeat the other two spirits, the Skeleton will enrage and start to charge up beam attacks in your direction. Because of this, you’ll need to decide if it’s better to deal with it sooner while dodging the other spirits and the Revenant, or try dodging its beams toward the end.
The Revenant herself isn’t one to underestimate. Certain times she’ll prefer to hang back by the Skeleton or around the edges of the arena, leaving her spirits to do the talking. However, she will also employ the Triple Rings of Light incantation that spread out in front of her, dealing heavy damage both coming and going — try to strafe when at range to avoid the rings as they move outward.
Even when you try to get close, her Rings of Light can deal major damage with little time to react, and she can also cast Rejection to blast you away at close range. Once you’re staggered or low on stamina, she often dashes forward to slash with a spectral claw weapon that can hit hard when you least expect it!
The fight may take a lot of practice to get down, so try playing to your strengths by picking a class you are comfortable with, and slowly pick off the Revenant’s allies before engaging carefully, and avoiding her incantations at all costs.
If you want an easier time taking her and her spirit allies down, we highly recommend using Ironeye. Given that he has unlimited ammo, you can take your time peppering the spirit allies from afar (and take out the Skeleton second before the slow moving Pumpkin Head so he doesn’t use his beam attack).
Once all the spirits are gone, you can then bait the Revenant into trying to charge you while you dash past using your Skill to create a weak point you can capitalize on. Since you’ll mostly be at range, you’ll have an easier time sidestepping her Rings of Light.
Once the Revenant is defeated, you’ll return to the Roundtable Hold, where you can now choose her as one of the playable Character Classes.
Playing as the Revenant
She’s a very peculiar character, with fairly low stats except for her magical skills. Her true powers lie in the ability to summon those spirits you had to fight, as well as raising enemies she defeats as temporary spirits! As a complex class, be prepared to put a lot of practice in before you can play the Revenant to her full potential.
