WorldPride marched through DC for Pride month, in defiance of Trump
WorldPride, The global festival promoting LGBTQ+ visibility, held its anniversary parade in D.C.
The NYC Pride parade kicks off June 29, and is expected to draw millions of spectators and participants to Manhattan, bringing to close Pride Month in a colorful show of unity and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community.
New York City is the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ movement, with the NYC Pride March among the largest civil rights demonstrations in the world with historic ties to the 1969 Stonewall Riots. This year’s theme, “Rise Up: Pride in Protest,” serves as a rallying cry for the LGBTQ+ community in a challenging political climate where the Trump administration has made moves that has undermined the community, from restricting access to gender-affirming medical care for transgender people to cutting ties to suicide hotlines for gay youth.
“I think it’s important that we are attuned to our communities and what’s important in our communities,” NYC Pride Co-Chair Kazz Alexander said to Out in Jerseyadding that the theme of “rising up and being in protest” is to demonstrate that LGBTQ+ First Amendment rights and civil liberties are being challenged.
